Mustangs Swept in Saturday Doubleheader at UC Davis

DAVIS – Senior righthander Kate Judy struck out a season high eight UC Davis hitters to open a Saturday doubleheader at LaRue Field, but a fourth-inning Mustang error contributed to the host's decisive run as the Cal Poly softball team dropped a 2-1 decision to the Aggies. Cal Poly also dropped game No. 2, 5-2
During Saturday's opening matchup, UC Davis (9-18, 3-2) took a 1-0 lead at the first opportunity as Aggies second baseman Rylee Reeves plated center fielder Mickey Buscemi with a first-inning, one-out sacrifice fly.
Held hitless through the opening two innings by Aggies righthander Caroline Grimes (3-9), Cal Poly tied the matchup in the third. After senior first baseman Malia Mah's leadoff single, sophomore center fielder A'Niyla Byrd's attempted bunt was mishandled by UC Davis first baseman Sydney Polli. Freshman right fielder Maddy Bermudez followed with another bunt before a Grimes throwing error allowed freshman pinch runner Aly Barrios to score.
Judy, whose eight strikeouts were four shy of her career best set in 2022, kept UC Davis to two hits through the initial three innings before the Aggies pushed across the eventual winning run in the fourth. Reeves was dealt a leadoff walk before another mishandled sacrifice bunt – this time off the bat of catcher Grace Kilday – placed two Aggies on. Polli next executed her bunt before a sacrifice fly from shortstop Marley Panziera provided UC Davis a 2-1 lead without a hit.
Cal Poly (4-18, 0-5) stranded nine baserunners in Saturday's opener – including the bags full during the top half of the sixth.
During Saturday's second matchup, Cal Poly went up 1-0 in the second after sophomore second baseman Sehren Martinez followed junior center fielder Kiara Blanchard's leadoff double with a one-out, run-scoring single.
In the circle for the Mustangs, freshman Natalie Camarena stranded three UC Davis baserunners and kept the Aggies scoreless before giving way to fellow righthander Paige Maier, who preserved Cal Poly's lead through four.
The Aggies, however, overtook Cal Poly with one down in the fifth as right fielder Alyssa Dethlefson singled, Buscemi drew a walk and designated player designated player Vanessa Calvillo delivered a two-run double. Two batters later, Kilday added another run-scoring double as the Aggies exited the fifth up 3-1.
The Mustangs took a run back in the sixth as junior third baseman Mylina Garza brought home freshman shortstop Sienna Erskine with a single up the middle. Cal Poly, however, stranded runners at the corner bases and UC Davis scored twice during the bottom of the sixth.
Cal Poly and UC Davis complete the three-game series on Sunday, March 16. First pitch on ESPN+ is 12 noon.
