Mustangs Prevail in Bottom of the Seventh versus Oregon State
2/9/2025 2:21:00 PM | Softball
SAN LUIS OBISPO – Freshman righthander Natalie Camarena (above) earned her first collegiate victory after tossing five and one-third innings of relief while hitting her first career home run Sunday afternoon as the Cal Poly softball program – entering the bottom of the seventh trailing Oregon State, 6-5 – scored twice without a hit to close the 2025 Mustang Classic with a 7-6 win.
Without the lead Sunday until the final run crossed the plate, Cal Poly opened the bottom half of the seventh with freshman left fielder Maddy Bermudez reaching on a dropped third strike before advancing to third after junior center fielder Kiara Blanchard's attempted sacrifice bunt was mishandled by Oregon State second baseman Paige Bambarger. Senior catcher Julia Barnett followed with a fielder's choice that plated Bermudez for a tied scoreline.
Four batters later and with the bases loaded and two down, freshman shortstop Sienna Erskine grounded a ball to Oregon State third baseman Lici Campbell, whose elected throw to first sailed past Tristian Thompson and allowed Blanchard to score for the 7-6 victory.
Oregon State (3-2) opened Sunday's scoring with a five-run second inning, scoring five times with two down before Camarena took over in the circle.
Camarena retired seven of the first eight hitters faced and, during the bottom half of the third, broke Cal Poly onto the scoreboard with a solo homer down the left field line.
The Mustangs then equalized in the fourth, initially loading the bags with two down before sophomore right fielder A'Niyla Byrd delivered a bases-clearing double to left center. Camarena then plated Byrd with a run-scoring single for a 5-5 deadlock.
Camarena, who finished with four strikeouts and allowed just three hits, conceded her only run when Oregon State scored in the top of the seventh to go ahead 6-5.
Cal Poly continues action with five games at the Feb. 14-16 Silicon Valley Classic, co-hosted by Santa Clara and San Jose State. Action begins Friday, Feb. 14 against Colorado State (12 noon) and Santa Clara (5:30 p.m.).
