SANTA CLARA – Junior center fielder Kiara Blanchard (above) hit her first career home run Friday evening, but Santa Clara scored 12 times without reply as the Cal Poly softball program closed opening-day action at the Silicon Valley Classic I with a 12-4, six-inning setback to the co-hosting Broncos. Earlier Friday, Cal Poly opened tournament action with a 1-0 loss to Colorado State with the Rams scoring the game's only run in the top of the seventh.
During Friday's second matchup at Santa Clara, Cal Poly (1-6) produced the game's opening run with one down in the top of the first inning as junior third baseman Mylina Garza plated freshman left fielder Maddy Bermudez with a sacrifice fly.
An inning later, Blanchard handed Cal Poly a 3-0 lead with her two-run shot to center field that also brought in sophomore right fielder A'Niyla Byrd. Cal Poly then furthered the advantage to 4-0 in the third as Byrd picked up her first RBI of the year by scoring Garza with a fielder's choice.
Held hitless through the opening two innings, Santa Clara halved Cal Poly's lead in the third, scoring twice on a Mustang fielding error. The Broncos then tied the matchup in the fourth through right fielder Abigail Charpentier's two-run homer off the left field foul pole.
Santa Clara surged ahead with a three-run fifth inning that comprised run-scoring at-bats from third baseman Hope Alley and first baseman Lauren Bryson before the former scored on a wild pitch for the 7-4 scoreline. Santa Clara added five further runs in the sixth to complete the run-rule decision.
During Friday's opening 1-0 loss to Colorado State, Cal Poly starting senior righthander Kate Judy limited the Rams to just two hits through the opening five innings while stranding four. She then completed the top of the sixth by stranding two more Rams to keep the matchup scoreless.
With freshman righthander Natalie Camarena (1-2) taking over for Judy to begin the seventh, Colorado State pushed across the decisive run. After leading off with a single, Rams first baseman Kyra Smith moved to second through a groundout and third on a wild pitch before scoring with center fielder Autumn Rutherford's infield groundout.
Offensively, the Mustangs advanced baserunners into scoring position during the second and third without success while Colorado State curtailed Cal Poly by turning inning-ending double plays to close the second and fourth. The Mustangs then saw sophomore pinch runner JJ Babore thrown out on an attempted steal to end the fifth.
Retired in order to close sixth, Cal Poly received a leadoff single from senior catcher Julia Barnett to start the bottom of the seventh. Two batters later and with one down, however, freshman first baseman Maya Venegas lined into a game-ending double play.
