Cal Poly on Downside Twice Saturday at Mustang Classic
2/8/2025 7:51:00 PM | Softball
SAN LUIS OBISPO – Senior catcher and reigning Big West Defensive Player of the Year honoree Julia Barnett (above) swatted a second-inning home run before providing a two-run double, but the Cal Poly softball program closed second-day action at its own Mustang Classic with a 15-6 setback to Oregon State. Earlier Saturday at Bob Janssen Field, Cal Poly also fell to Ball State, 13-1 (five innings).
During Saturday's second matchup versus Oregon State, the Beavers (3-1) scored twice in the top half of the first before Barnett's second career home run halved Cal Poly's disadvantage entering the second inning – when the Mustangs tied the game after senior first baseman Malia Mah crossed home following a two-out Oregon State throwing error.
The Beavers, however, unknotted the scoreline at the first chance, initially loading the bases with one down in the third before first baseman Tristian Thompson laced a grand slam over the left center field wall for a 6-2 lead.
With Oregon State starting righthander Logan Hulon (2-1) retiring Cal Poly in order to close the third and fourth innings, the Beavers increased their margin to 8-2 in the top half of the fifth with second baseman Paige Bambarger delivering a two-run triple.
Cal Poly (0-4) closed its gap during the bottom half of the fifth as Barnett and junior first baseman Mylina Garza enjoyed back-to-back two-run doubles for an 8-6 deficit.
Oregon State though responded with a four-run sixth before scoring three times in the seventh to place the decision out of reach.
During Saturday's opening matchup against Ball State, the Cardinals (3-1) took the game's only lead at the first chance with starting righthander Ella Whitney (2-0) supplying a bases-loaded, run-scoring single before first baseman Kaitlyn Gibson capped the top of the first with a sacrifice fly that brought home catcher McKayla Timmons.
Cardinals second baseman Maia Pietrzak then belted a two-run homer to center field in the top of the second as part of a four-run inning that handed Ball State a 6-0 lead.
In the circle for Ball State, Whitney faced the minimum amount of Mustangs through the opening two innings. Mustang sophomore right fielder A'Niyla Byrd, however, singled with one down in the third before moving to second and then third on a Whitney wild pitch. Junior center fielder Kiara Blanchard then plated a sliding Byrd with an infield groundout.
After scoring twice in the third, Ball State furthered the lead to 11-1 in the fourth through right fielder Maddie Weaver's three-run homer down the left field line before adding two more in the fifth for the final scoreline.
