Mustangs Drop Friday Louisville Slugger Invite Opener to Pitt
2/28/2025 11:54:00 AM | Softball
LONG BEACH – Scoreless into the fifth inning during Friday morning's Louisville Slugger Invitational opening matchup against Pitt, the Cal Poly softball program was undone by a pair of fifth-inning fielding errors during a 4-0 setback to the Panthers at Long Beach State.
Cal Poly starting sophomore righthander Ally Robbins (0-1) stranded two Pitt baserunners apiece to close each of the opening four innings. A leadoff fielding error from Mustangs freshman left fielder Maddy Bermudez, however, allowed Panthers first baseman Kaitlyn Brannstrom to reach and designated player Saleyna Daniel followed with a sacrifice bunt. Left fielder Camryn Murphy continued with a single before an errant throw by Cal Poly junior center fielder Kiara Blanchard allowed the game's opening run to cross.
Pitt third baseman Desirae Martinez added with a run-scoring single later in the inning and the Panthers enjoyed a two-out, two-run single from Daniel in the sixth for the 4-0 decision.
Offensively, Cal Poly's best opportunity to break onto the scoreboard occurred during the top half of the second, as shortstop Sienna Erskine drew a leadoff walk before designated player Natalie Camarena produced a one-out double to place Mustangs at the corner bases. Pitt starting righthander Gwen Sparks (3-2), however, retired the next two Mustangs and then the Cal Poly side in order during the third, fourth and fifth innings.
Cal Poly continues Louisville Slugger Invitational action on Saturday, March 1 against first-time opponent Omaha (9 a.m.) and Utah Tech (2 p.m.).
