SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Sophomore forward Mary Carter excelled on both ends of the floor as Cal Poly women's basketball put on a dominant performance from start to finish Saturday as they ran away from CSUN at home, 75-34.
Carter scored a career-high 22 points on 70 percent shooting, including 4-6 from three. She also was stellar on defense, blocking a career-high five shots. Freshman guard Gabby Robinson also had a career day, scoring 12 points on a perfect 6-6 from the field.
As a team, the Mustangs (11-13, 6-8 Big West) shot 53 percent from the field and 53 percent from three. Their pressure defense forced the Matadors (4-19, 2-12 Big West) into 30 turnovers which Cal Poly turned into 32 points. The 34 points scored by CSUN is the fewest Cal Poly has allowed in a game this season.
CSUN led 5-3 to begin the game. That was their last lead of the game as the Mustangs finished the quarter on a 17-3 run to lead it 20-8. Cal Poly was even more dominant in the second as they held the Matadors to just two points in the entire quarter as they stretched their lead to 45-10 by halftime.
The 45 first half points are the most Cal Poly has scored in a opening half this season and their second most points in a half overall this year.
The Mustangs didn't slow down in the third, outscoring CSUN 22-12 in the quarter and led by as much as 46 at one point.
Cal Poly will look to carry this momentum on the road next week when they travel to face third place UC San Diego Thursday, Feb. 20 at 7 p.m. and seventh place UC Riverside Saturday, Feb. 22 at 4 p.m.
