Lichtie Scores 16 But Mustangs Fall at UC San Diego
2/20/2025 9:17:00 PM | Women's Basketball
LA JOLLA, Calif. — Redshirt sophomore forward Sierra Lichtie recorded her 11th double digit scoring game of the season but struggles to consistently score saw Cal Poly women's basketball fall on the road Thursday at UC San Diego, 66-49.
Lichtie scored a team high 16 points on 40 percent shooting and brought in nine rebounds. Sophomore forward Mary Carter added nine points on 50 percent shooting. It was a tough first half for the Mustangs (11-14, 6-9 Big West), scoring 13 points while turning it over 17 times.
The Tritons (14-13, 10-5 Big West), who clinched their spot in the Big West Championship with the win, had three players score in double figures and led the entirety of the game as they shot 40 percent from the field.
Neither team scored the first three minutes of the game. Cal Poly was held to two points the first seven minutes of the opening quarter but finished the quarter on a 5-0 run to trim the deficit to 13-7 heading into the second.
Cal Poly was held without a point the first six minutes of the second quarter as UCSD scored 10 points to extend their lead to 23-7. The Tritons led at halftime 27-13.
Down 31-13 in the third, Cal Poly scored seven straight quick points to cut the lead down to 11 with seven minutes left the quarter. The Tritons then went on an 8-2 run to push their lead back up to 17 midway through the third.
Down 50-33 to start the fourth, Cal Poly started the quarter on a 9-3 run to cut the deficit down to 11 with five minutes to go. However, UCSD was then able to push the lead back up to 16 with just under two minutes left to run away with it.
The Mustangs now head to UC Riverside to face the 8-8 Highlanders on Saturday at 1 p.m. The game will be aired on ESPN+ as well as on Spectrum SportsNet.
