Bourland Reaches Career Milestone but Mustangs Fall to Highlanders

RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Three Mustangs scored in double figures and senior Sydney Bourland reached the 500 career rebounds milestone mark, but Cal Poly women's basketball came up short Saturday on the road at UC Riverside, 74-63.
Graduate guard Ashley Hiraki was a perfect 6-6 from the field and finished with 14 points. Sophomore forward Mary Carter also scored 14 points on 50 percent shooting. Redshirt sophomore forward Sierra Lichtie added 12 points and five rebounds for the Mustangs, who started the game red hot on offense as they shot 74 percent in the first half and 60 percent for the game.
The Highlanders had four players in double figures as they shot 52 percent from the field for the game. UC Riverside also converted Cal Poly's 21 turnovers into 33 points compared to eight points off turnovers for the Mustangs.
Cal Poly had a strong first quarter, taking a 20-13 lead into the second and led 22-13 in the second, their largest of the game. UC Riverside got back within five with six minutes left in the half. The Mustangs led it by that same margin at halftime, 35-30.
Things turned midway through the third as the Highlanders finished the quarter on a 14-2 run to take a 53-45 lead heading into the fourth. That continued into the fourth as UC Riverside went up by as much as 14 with just under seven minutes left to play.
Cal Poly then fought to get back within seven with 4:30 left in the game. However, the Highlanders then scored five straight points to go back up by 12 with three minutes left.
The Mustangs return home next week to host rival UCSB Thursday, Feb. 27 at 6 p.m. inside Mott Athletics Center. Cal Poly will then go on the road Saturday, March 1 to face Cal State Bakersfield.
