Mustangs Suffer 62-49 Setback to Idaho State Saturday

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — freshman Charish Thompson and sophomore Vanessa McManus combined for 33 points, but the Mustang women’s basketball team suffered a 62-49 defeat to Idaho State Saturday afternoon inside Mott Athletics Center.
Thompson finished with a game high 19 points on an impressive 7-8 shooting, including 3-3 from beyond the arc to go along with six rebounds. McManus had 14 points, going 7-8 from the free throw line. Sophomore forward Nora Perez added nine points and 10 rebounds.
The Mustangs (2-7, 0-2 Big West) shot better than the Bengals (6-4) both from the field and from three. However, Idaho State outrebounded Cal Poly 34-26, including 13 offensive rebounds. They also won the turnover battle 22-16, which they turned into 20 points.
Trailing by 10 at halftime, the Mustangs got back within five quickly. However, by the end of the third, Cal Poly still found itself down by 10. With just under five minutes to play in the fourth, the Mustangs rallied to get within seven but were unable to get any closer as Idaho State finished the game with a 7-1 run.
Cal Poly now embarks on a stretch of four straight road games, starting next Tuesday, Dec. 16 at No. 4 UCLA. Tip is set for 7 p.m. in Westwood with the game airing on Big Ten Network.
