LOS ANGELES — Playing without its leading scorer in Vanessa McManus, the Cal Poly women’s basketball team dropped a 115-28 decision at No. 4 UCLA on Tuesday night at Pauley Pavilion, as the Bruins used an early surge and balanced scoring to hand the Mustangs a non-conference road loss.
The Mustangs (2-8) hung tough early but UCLA built its lead and maintained control throughout the contest, specifically outscoring Cal Poly 35-3 in the second quarter. The Bruins shot nearly 60 percent from the floor and capitalized on turnovers to create transition points.
Freshmen Katie Peiffer and Charish Thompson led the Mustangs with eight points apiece. Gabby Robinson added four points. Cal Poly continued to battle inside and on the glass, competing through all four quarters against one of the nation’s top programs.
UCLA had multiple players in double figures, led by Kiki Rice with 23 points. Lauren Betts added 20 points, while Gianna Kneepkens scored 19.
Cal Poly will stay in Los Angeles to take on No. 19 USC Thursday at 7 p.m. The game will air on Big Ten Network Plus.
