
Mustangs Drop Close One to No. 7 UC Davis, 34-27

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Cal Poly quarterback Bo Kelly threw for 251 yards and accounted for three total touchdowns, but the Mustang football team fell in a close battle to No. 7 UC Davis, 34-27 in the Battle for the Golden Horseshoe.
Kelly was 20-37 with two passing touchdowns and had a receiving touchdown. Wide receiver Logan Booher caught both touchdown passes as he finished with a career-high 101 receiving yards. Defensively, linebacker Kenny Olson finished with a career-high 13 tackles, including 10 solo.
Cal Poly got off to a hot start. On the opening drive of the game, Bo Kelly led the Mustangs 69 yards down the field in 12 plays. On a 3rd and 11, Kelly connected with Logan Booher for a 23-yard touchdown pass to get the Mustangs on the board first.
Davis got on the board early in the second quarter following a five-play, 67-yard drive. Aggie quarterback Caden Pinnick found wide receiver Zach Jones for a 36-yard touchdown pass to tie it up at 7-7 with 13 minutes left in the half.
The Mustangs took a 10-7 lead with 7:24 left in the first half as kicker Gianluca Dimauro nailed a 33-yard field goal, finishing off a 12-play, 73-yard drive that elapsed over six minutes. UC Davis took the lead back with just under two minutes to play in the first half, 13-10, following a six-yard touchdown pass.
After forcing Davis to punt on the first drive of the second half, Cal Poly tied the game at 13-13, following a 30-yard field goal by Noah Serna that finished off a 12-play, 52-yard drive. That tie wouldn't last for much longer as the Aggies went down and scored a touchdown on their next drive, 8 plays and 75 yards, capped by Zach Jones' second receiving touchdown of the night from six yards out.
The Mustangs finished the third quarter on a high note, going 71 yards in eight plays, as Kelly once again connected with Booher on a 24-yard touchdown pass to tie it a 20 apiece. UC Davis took the lead back with just under 12 minutes left in the fourth after the Aggies went 75 yards in nine plays, running in a nine yard touchdown to take a 27-20 advantage.
UC Davis then went up 34-20 with six minutes to play after going 83 yards in six plays, capped off by a six-yard touchdown run by quarterback Caden Pinnick. Cal Poly scored a 'Philly special' type touchdown with just under two minutes left as wide receiver Michael Briscoe threw a touchdown pass to Bo Kelly in the end zone for two yards.
An onside kick by Cal Poly was unsuccessful and the Aggies ran out the clock to finish the game.
Cal Poly, now 3-3 overall and 1-1 in Big Sky play, heads back on the road next week when heading to Missoula to face No. 4 Montana Saturday, Oct. 11 at 1 p.m. on ESPN+.
