
Cal Poly Heads to Missoula to Face No. 4 Montana Saturday

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Cal Poly football team will continue its stretch of playing four straight games of playing against top 25 teams this Saturday when heading to Missoula to face No. 4 Montana. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. PT

The Mustangs have been surging this season, with a 3-3 overall record and 1-1 in Big Sky play, currently tied for fourth in the always tough Big Sky. After a road win over No. 21 Sacramento State in the Big Sky opener. This past weekend, Cal Poly narrowly lost to No. 7 UC Davis, 34-27.
The Mustangs now turn their attention to an undefeated Grizzlies team, one of eight unbeaten teams remaining in the FCS that is averaging nearly 40 points per game and is 5-0 on the season. It will be a tough environment for the Mustangs as they head into Washington-Grizzly Stadium that has been sold out four consecutive games. They are coming off a 42-38 shootout win over Idaho State last weekend.
Montana leads the all-time series with the Mustangs, 19-5. Cal Poly last beat the Grizzlies in 2016 by a score of 42-41.
Cal Poly has several players playing at a very high level. Wide receiver Michael Briscoe leads the Big Sky in receiving at over 88 yards per game. He also leads in receiving touchdowns with seven, which is second in the entire FCS. Defensively, linebacker Mkey D’Amato is eighth in the FCS in sacks with five and fifth in total tackles with 65. Both D’Amato and fellow linebacker Kenny Olson are each top five in the Big Sky in total tackles.
As a team, the Mustangs rank as the 14th best passing offense in the FCS at 271.8 yards per game. The Mustang defense ranks 27th in the FCS in sacks.
Montana is led offensively by wide receiver Michael Wortham, this past week’s Big Sky Offensive Player of the Week. He leads the FCS in all-purpose yards, with 883 combined rushing, receiving, and return yards. The Grizzlies also have one of the top running backs in the Big Sky in Eli Gillman, who leads the Big Sky in rushing.
Following Saturday’s game, Cal Poly enjoys a bye week next week before returning to Mustang Memorial Field to host No. 5 Montana State Saturday, Oct. 25 at 5 p.m.
