Mustangs Drop Road Contest at UC Davis

DAVIS, Calif. — Mustang redshirt sophomore forward Sierra Lichtie knocked down a career-high four threes, all in the first half, and a total of three players finished in double figures, but Cal Poly women's basketball had a tough night shooting as a team as they fell on the road Thursday night to UC Davis, 63-51.
Lichtie finished with team-high of 16 points and eight rebounds for the Mustangs (8-9, 3-4 Big West). Sophomore forward Mary Carter added 12 points while graduate guard Ashley Hiraki had 10 points.
Cal Poly shot well from three in the first half, going 6-14. However, the Mustangs shot 1-8 from three and 5-30 overall from the field in the second half. Meanwhile, the Aggies (12-5, 6-1 Big West) shot 52 percent as a team.
UC Davis got out to a 15-5 lead with three minutes left in the first quarter. Cal Poly finished the first on an 8-1 run to draw within three heading into the second.
In the second, Cal Poly continued to chip away at the Davis lead and hang tight with the Aggies. With two minutes left in the half, Shah knocked down a three to give Cal Poly its first lead of the game 32-30. The Aggies closed the half with three points to give them a one point lead at halftime.
With UC Davis leading by one with four minutes to go in the third, the Aggies went on a 8-0 run to take a 45-36 lead. UC Davis led by eight heading into the fourth. Cal Poly was held without a field goal for a five minute period of the fourth quarter as UC Davis went up by 12 with just under two minutes left.
Cal Poly's tough schedule continues as the Mustangs return home Saturday to face third place UC Irvine inside Mott Athletics Center at 2 p.m.
