1/18/2025 5:33:00 PM | Women's Basketball
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Annika Shah and Mary Carter combined for 35 points, but an and-one layup with one second left by UC Irvine lifted them over Cal Poly Saturday afternoon inside Mott Athletics Center, 59-57.
Shah finished with 18 points and a career-high seven rebounds as she shot 4-8 from three. Carter poured in 17 points, shooting over 50 percent for the game. Redshirt sophomore forward Sierra Lichtie was all over the boards as she pulled down a career-high 15 rebounds to go along with eight points.
The Anteaters (12-5, 6-1 Big West) were led by Hunter Hernandez who had 18 points. UC Irvine got a boost offensively turning the Mustangs' (8-10, 3-5 Big West) into 17 points. UC Irvine also held an advantage in second chance points with 12.
With under a minute left and Cal Poly trailing by two, Mustang graduate guard Ashley Hiraki made a three to put the Mustangs in front 57-56.
With the score still the same, UC Irvine's Hunter Hernandez drove to the rim, made a layup and got fouled. She made the free throw to put the Anteaters ahead by two with 1.3 seconds remaining. After a timeout, a three point attempt by Lichtie came up short as time expired.
The game was tight the entire way as neither team ever led by more than five. UC Irvine scored the opening basket of the game before Cal Poly came back with seven straight points. The Anteaters responded with their own run to draw within two. The score was tied 17-17 heading into the second.
UC Irvine scored the first four points of the second quarter before Cal Poly went on a 8-0 run over a four minute stretch to take a 25-21 lead. The Mustangs led 25-23 at halftime. The game stayed close in the third as apart from the opening minute, neither team led by more than three.
Cal Poly led by four with four minutes left in the fourth but were held to five points the rest of the way.
The Mustangs will be off for a week before going on the road next Saturday, Jan. 25 to take on Long Beach State, who is tied with UC Irvine for first in the Big West standings.
