Mustangs on Target Thursday, but Fall at Oral Roberts, 1-0
8/29/2024 8:54:00 PM | Men's Soccer
TULSA, Okla. – The Cal Poly men's soccer program forced Oral Roberts goalkeeper Joao Mesquita into 11 saves Thursday evening, but a 40th-minute penalty from Golden Eagles forward Omar Mora decided the matchup at Case Soccer Complex as the Mustangs sustained a 1-0 setback.
Junior goalkeeper Nicky McCune recorded three saves for Cal Poly (0-2-1), which outshot Oral Roberts (1-1-1), 22-14, and earned 10 corner kick attempts, but the Mustangs were unable to find the back of the opposition net during the program's first all-time visit to Oklahoma.
"Our boys worked extremely hard tonight on the road against a very good attacking team," second-year Cal Poly head coach Oige Kennedy said. "We pushed throughout the game with 22 shots and 10 corners. We were the aggressor for the 90 minutes and can be proud of how much effort the group gave.
"We have lots of belief in this young team and we know if we stick to the process of getting a little better each day and compete like we did tonight, we'll have lots to show for it at the end of the season."
Cal Poly tested Mesquita four times inside the opening three minutes with junior defender Nico Baltazar and freshman midfielder Quinn Mahoney (above) – who finished with a career high seven shot attempts – each turned away twice. Forward Armin Tehrani and fellow freshman Charlie Hogan were later thwarted by Mesquita midway through the opening half.
Scoreless six minutes before the break, Golden Eagles defender Schinieder Mimy played a ball over the top and into the penalty area for forward Jorge Estrada. Coming forward to play the ball, McCune charged into Estrada and a penalty was awarded that Mora converted at the left post.
The Mustangs produced three more shots on goal during the opening nine minutes of the second half with the Mustangs unable to break through.
Cal Poly completes its season-opening, four-match road trip at Tulsa on Sunday, Sept. 1. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. PT.
"We're ready to go again Sunday against Tulsa and look forward to getting after it together on the road one more time before coming home to Spanos for the next slate of games," Kennedy said.
