Mustangs Undone by Penalties in Sunday Setback at Tulsa
9/1/2024 8:03:00 PM | Men's Soccer
TULSA, Okla. – First-half goals from forwards Conner Lisenbee (above) and Ashton Alonge twice handed the Cal Poly men's soccer program the lead Sunday evening at Tulsa, but two Golden Hurricane penalties in the second half – including an 88th-minute conversion from midfielder Ander Bengoetxea – handed the Mustangs a 3-2 setback.
"The team pushed again tonight and again we gave a really good representation of ourselves on the road in a tough environment against a more experienced team," Cal Poly second-year head coach Oige Kennedy said. "It was a tight game with two great goals for us and some really positive attacking soccer.
"Unfortunately, both VAR calls went to the opponent, so we just have to grow from the experience and push even harder in the next game."
Facing Tulsa (1-2-0) for the first time in program history, Cal Poly (0-3-1) took the lead with its first attempt on target as junior forward Oren Stuppel lofted a pass over the Golden Hurricane defense for Lisenbee, who volleyed first-time past goalkeeper Carlito Saylon. Freshman midfielder Quinn Mahoney also earned an assist after picking out Stuppel at the top of the box.
Tulsa leveled eight minutes before the break with substitute Will Edwards crossing from the right for defender Camilo Vargas, whose first touch bested Mustang junior goalkeeper Nicky McCune (who finished with five saves).
Cal Poly, however, required just 91 seconds to surge back in front with Alonge dribbling toward goal from near the halfway line and firing past Saylon from just inside Tulsa's penalty area.
Into the second half, Tulsa equalized on 62 minutes after Cal Poly sophomore defender Parker Owens was yellow carded for a perceived late lunge on the fringe of the penalty box on Tulsa forward Clement Badger, who was dribbling toward goal. Tulsa midfielder Alvaro Torrijos converted from the spot to tie the matchup, 2-2.
Less than three minutes from full time, Mustang graduate defender Jack Muoio was cited for a hand ball on the edge of the box after Tulsa defender Alex Cunningham crossed from the right. Bengoetxea then converted his side's second penalty.
Cal Poly resumes action on Thursday, Sept. 5 as the Mustangs open their home slate against San Jose State. Kickoff from Mustang Memorial Field at Spanos Stadium is 7:30 p.m.
"We have a belief that if we keep working the way we are that, in the long run, we'll benefit from these experiences," Kennedy added. "We have a group of young men that's bought in and are committed to each other. We're looking forward to showing that on Spanos in the next two games."
