Guerra Goal Nets Cal Poly First Win of 2024
9/5/2024 10:35:00 PM | Men's Soccer
SAN LUIS OBISPO – Sophomore midfielder Diego Guerra's 35th-minute strike (above) marked the difference for the Cal Poly men's soccer program Thursday evening as the Mustangs earned their first victory of 2024 with a 1-0 home decision against San Jose State at Mustang Memorial Field at Spanos Stadium.
Kept to one shot on target through the first half-hour of Thursday's home opener, Cal Poly (1-3-1) produced the only goal required for victory 10 minutes from the break after a throw-in from freshman forward Finn Linas was headed down inside the San Jose State penalty area by sophomore defender Parker Owens. Guerra, a Big West All-Freshman Team selection last fall after scoring twice, latched on to the headed ball and fired past Spartans goalkeeper Edgar Guerra for his first goal of the season.
In goal for Cal Poly, junior Nicky McCune chalked up his second career clean sheet – and first since a scoreless draw in the Aug. 22 season opener at San Francisco – after turning away the Spartans in the 67th and 85th minutes.
"It was great to be finally at home and playing at Spanos and I felt we played against a very good San Jose State team that's extremely well-coached," second-year Cal Poly head coach Oige Kennedy said. "They move the ball so well and [SJSU head coach Simon Tobin] has built such a great team with a majority of young local players.
"So, we had to suffer in our press at times and had to do the hard work off the ball tonight. We did that well at times, but in possession we're capable of so much more. We can move the ball so much better than we did, so we have to learn and grow from tonight. We managed the end of the game well and I think that's something we can be proud of as we're gaining more experience with each game for our young group."
Cal Poly's two-match home stand concludes on Sunday, Sept. 8 with a 1 p.m. matchup versus Gonzaga (5-0-0).
"The next game will be a fun one against a team that's on a very good run at the moment," said Kennedy of the Bulldogs. "We always cherish the opportunity to be at Spanos and we'll be ready to battle come Sunday."
