Mustangs Cap Homestand with 3-0 Victory versus Gonzaga
9/8/2024 4:19:00 PM | Men's Soccer
SAN LUIS OBISPO – Junior defender Nico Baltazar and freshmen Quinn Mahoney (above) and Colin Pearce all scored their first goals in a Cal Poly men's soccer uniform while junior goalkeeper Nicky McCune produced a 55th-minute penalty save Sunday afternoon as the Mustangs closed a two-match home stand with a 3-0 triumph against Gonzaga.
McCune, who combined with junior Andres Rosales on a second successive shutout, finished with two saves for Cal Poly (2-3-1), which outshot Gonzaga (5-1-0), 18-10, to hand the previously undefeated Bulldogs their first defeat of 2024.
"[Gonzaga] hadn't lost until today and were ranked in the top 50 of the RPI, so we knew it wouldn't be easy," second-year Cal Poly head coach Oige Kennedy said. "They'd scored multiple goals in all their games and have some good attacking pieces, so credit to our guys for getting the clean sheet and the victory at home.
"We scored some good goals, we have guys getting their first college goals and their first college assists and they're growing with each opportunity they get on the field, which is exciting."
Cal Poly produced Sunday's eventual game-winning strike with its first attempt on target as a 15th-minute chip from sophomore Joaquin Torres fell to fellow defender Parker Owens inside Gonzaga's penalty area. Owens headed down toward Mahoney who tapped to Baltazar with the defender firing past Bulldogs goalkeeper Chema Preciado at the left post.
The Mustangs conceded a penalty 10 minutes into the second half following a video review, but McCune – with a diving extension to his right – parried away midfielder Ben Aguee's attempt from the spot.
"Our sport is so fickle. Parker Owens had a great header that hit the crossbar off a corner kick moments before they get the penalty," Kennedy said. "Nicky came up big in that moment like he has all season, so credit to him and [goalkeeper] coach Zach Watson for all the work they do in preparation for these match-defining moments."
Cal Poly then doubled its advantage on 61 minutes as graduate defender Jack Muoio sent a ball over the top that Mahoney headed past Preciado at the right post.
Pearce completed the scoring four minutes from full time, dribbling toward the top of the Gonzaga penalty area following a ball from freshman forward Armin Tehrani and besting Preciado.
Cal Poly resumes action with a two-match road trip at Utah Valley on Friday, Sept. 13 and Utah Tech on Monday, Sept. 16.
"We go back to being road warriors in Utah next weekend," Kennedy added. "We knew with our schedule we would be battled tested before conference starts so we're excited to get out and compete."
