Mahoney Helps Mustangs to 1-1 Draw at Utah Valley
9/13/2024 8:43:00 PM | Men's Soccer
OREM, Utah – Freshman forward Quinn Mahoney's team-leading second goal of the season cancelled out a 62nd-minute penalty from Utah Valley as the Cal Poly men's soccer program earned a 1-1 draw against the Wolverines Friday evening at Clyde Field.
Junior goalkeeper Nicky McCune chalked up three saves for Cal Poly (2-3-2), which extended its unbeaten run to three matches after outshooting Utah Valley (4-0-2), 14-9.
"I'm really proud of how the boys competed tonight," second-year Cal Poly head coach Oige Kennedy said. "It's a tough place to come and play on the road against a good team, they're well coached and they move the ball well. We embraced the hard moments without the ball and created some good chances when we had it.
"We feel it's a testimony to the grit of our team to keep fighting and going when you're behind in a game on the road. You can't guarantee a win in this sport, but you can always give that relentless work rate and 100 percent commitment to compete. The boys did that tonight. We're excited to go again Monday and we'll be ready to get after it together."
Both sides kept the other to three shot attempts and one on target during the first half with Mustang sophomore midfielder Jackson Miller turned away in the 48th minute.
It was the Wolverines that found Friday's opening goal with Cal Poly junior defender Nico Baltazar cited for a foul on Utah Valley forward Trevor Walk inside the penalty area. Wolverines midfielder Omar Yehya stepped to the spot and fired past McCune. Of the seven goals Cal Poly has conceded this season, four have been penalties.
The Mustangs though required just two minutes, 14 seconds to equalize with sophomores Diego Guerra and Parker Owens combining to set up Mahoney (above), who fired past Utah Valley goalkeeper Ben Wiliams at the right post from the top of the penalty area.
McCune made two additional saves following the penalty to preserve the draw, including an 89th-minute stop of midfielder Isaac Imojong.
Cal Poly concludes its two-match road trip against first-time foe Utah Tech on Monday, Sept. 16. Kickoff on ESPN+ is 6 p.m. PT.
