Mahoney with Third Straight; Cal Poly Draws 1-1 at Utah Tech
9/16/2024 8:39:00 PM | Men's Soccer
ST. GEORGE, Utah – Freshman midfielder Quinn Mahoney scored for the third successive match for the Cal Poly men's soccer program, but his fourth-minute strike was leveled 73 seconds prior to halftime by Utah Tech midfielder Damian Arguello as the Mustangs finished with a 1-1 draw at Greater Zion Stadium.
Junior goalkeeper Nicky McCune finished with a career best six saves for Cal Poly (2-3-3), which extended its unbeaten run to four straight matches in the program's first all-time meeting with Utah Tech (1-4-2).
"I think we come away frustrated from the game, not because of the result, but how we performed in the first half," second-year Cal Poly head coach Oige Kennedy said. "The environment we continue to strive to create is about work rate, competition level and being proactive. We scored very early on, then became too reactive and went away from what we're trying to do.
"So, frustrating in parts, but we have positives to look at with Quinn scoring again, the team going four games unbeaten, young guys coming in and having a positive impact on the game and holding on for the draw when we went a man down (in the 79th minute)."
Scoring their earliest goal this season with Monday's first attempt, the Mustangs earned a fourth-minute free kick 33 yards from goal and junior midfielder Bakuena Ramakatsa lofted his ball into Utah Tech's penalty area. Mahoney met the pass with his head, driving his third goal of the season past Trailblazers goalkeeper Stockton Short from 10 yards away.
At the opposite end of the field, McCune turned away Utah Tech in the eighth, 17th, 31st and 36th minutes before Arguello equalized 73 seconds from the break. After an initial attempt by defender Anthony Godinez struck the left post, the ball caromed off right for Arguello, who bested McCune at the opposite post.
Cal Poly itself tested Short four more times during the evening – including a second instance from Mahoney less than a minute after his goal.
Following a 12-day break, Cal Poly hosts the opening leg of the 2024 Blue-Green rivalry series against UC Santa Barbara on Saturday, Sept. 28 at 3 p.m. Scheduled as a non-conference matchup and with another high four-figure home crowd expected, the meeting for Big West points occurs Sunday, Oct. 6 at UC Santa Barbara.
"We'll build off these as we prepare for the next game," Kennedy added. "We know we're fortunate to play in the biggest rivalry game in college soccer twice a year. We cannot wait to be in Spanos ready to show our identity and intensity when we play UCSB next."
