McNicholas Tallies Season High as Mustangs Take Down UC Davis
2/3/2024 5:00:00 PM | Women's Basketball
DAVIS, Calif. — After being forced to forfeit the midweek game against UC Irvine, the Cal Poly women's basketball team earned sole position of fourth place in the Big West with a well-deserved 57-47 win on the road. In a fantastic team effort than had 44 combined turnovers and 57 rebounds between the opponents, the Mustangs swept UC Davis for the first time since 2014-15 while simultaneously handing the Aggies their first home loss since Nov. 9, 2023.
On the defensive end, it was the fourth time this season that the Mustangs held their opposition to less than 50 points. Despite a strong Davis presence under the basket, Cal Poly held true to its ranged shooting, pacing the Aggies at 41% from the field and 50% from beyond the arc.
Ania McNicholas (5-11 fg, 20 pts, 6 reb, 3 ast) led the game in the scoring column while resetting multiple season highs, which was similarly paralleled by Amanda Olinger also resetting her scoring mark. Annika Shah followed with 12 points, while leading with four assists in a typically strong game for her.
Cal Poly was behind early to a speedy UC Davis squad, but the Mustangs quickly found their stride with a nine-point run in part thanks to back-to-back layups from Olinger and a highlight-reel corner three via Shah. They were able to retain a steady first quarter lead despite a short but strong run from the Aggies near the break.
The Mustangs and Aggies continued a stark back-and-forth battle heading towards halftime as UC Davis overtook Cal Poly with less than five to play in the second quarter. Despite some foul trouble following the lead change, the Mustangs had no problem jumping on the back of Annika Shah to stay tied 26-26 at the break.
UC Davis' Megan Norris surged as the Aggies opened the third quarter on a 7-4 run before the Mustangs fought back and tied the game yet again. Turnovers and paint battles plagued the period for both teams, but it was Cal Poly that came out on top with Sidney Richards converting two from the charity stripe just before the buzzer.
The Mustangs shifted the defensive coverage on UCD's scoring threat, Norris, and began to open up offensively during the fourth quarter. McNicholas dominated down the stretch, scoring 11 of the final period's 18 points as Cal Poly sealed a 57-47 victory in the slug fest that featured dueling season-high point efforts from McNicholas and Olinger.
With Cal Poly now moving back in the right direction of the conference standings, holding the tie-breaking sweep over UC Davis, the Mustangs return home for a pair of contests in the Mott Athletics Center against CSUN on Thursday at 6 p.m. and Long Beach State on Saturday at 2 p.m.
