Shah’s Career High Sparks Mustangs’ Comeback Win Over CSUN

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — It wasn't always pretty but sparked by tough defense and timely shots, Cal Poly women's basketball was able to erase a 10-point second half deficit to comeback and beat CSUN at home Thursday night 75-68.Annika Shah led the Mustangs (12-9, 8-4 BW) with a career-high 25 points. Shah was 5-7 from three and a perfect 10-10 from the free throw line. Senior forward Natalia Ackerman recorded her sixth double-double of the year after finishing with 17 points and 12 rebounds.
Junior guard Sydney Bourland was the spark for the Mustangs defense after she recorded a career-high seven steals in addition to 12 points. Most of those steals came in fourth quarter as she was a big reason why Cal Poly was able to go on a 7-2 run over a two-minute span to give the Mustangs their first lead of the game of 56-55 with 5:30 left in the game.
In the first half, the Matadors (2-20, 0-12 BW) led by as much as eight in the second quarter. The Mustangs were able to hold CSUN without a field goal the final four minutes of the half as they trimmed CSUN lead's down to two at halftime.
In the third, Cal Poly trailed 40-30 with 7:30 left before a 10-4 Mustang run over the next three minutes cut the Matador lead down to four.
After Cal Poly took its first lead of the game with five-and-a-half minutes left in the fourth, they continued to go back-and-forth with CSUN from there. With the Mustangs leading 60-59 with 2:30 left, Cal Poly was able to pull away for the final time after going on a 7-0 over the next 90 seconds.
The win now gives Cal Poly eight conference wins for the year which surpasses their total from last year and is already the most since the 2020-21 season. The Mustangs are now tied for third in the Big West standings at 8-4 with UCSB and UC Davis with eight games left and two games back of first place Hawai'i.
Cal Poly will look to keep its winning ways going Saturday when hosting Long Beach State inside Mott Athletics Center at 2 p.m.
