Cal Poly Drops Saturday Pair to Illinois, BYU
2/24/2024 1:13:00 PM | Softball
CATHEDRAL CITY – Sophomore left fielder Kiara Blanchard (above) produced a career high three hits Saturday morning, but the Cal Poly softball program opened second-day action at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic with a 16-1 setback to Illinois. The Mustangs also conceded a big scoring inning to BYU in game No. 2, falling in the evening to the Cougars, 19-3.

During Saturday's opener against Illinois (2-5), Cal Poly starting junior righthander Paige Maier (3-1) kept the Fighting Illini to just two runs through the opening four innings. Highlighted by a solo home run from right fielder Kelly Ryono and a two-run double by first baseman Sydney Malott, Illinois added four runs in the fifth to go up 6-0.

Illinois then scored twice more in the top half of the sixth to place the contest in run-rule territory. The Mustangs extended the matchup during the bottom half of the sixth as a fielder's choice from senior designated player Mia Perez plated sophomore third baseman Mylina Garza. The Illini, however, crossed the plate eight more times in the seventh and Cal Poly was retired in order to complete the matchup.

During Saturday's second matchup against BYU (11-3), the Cougars – fueled by a grand slam from designated player Lily Owens and bases-clearing double by left fielder Maddie Bejarano – posted a 12-run top-of-the-first inning.

The Mustangs struck back with two runs during the bottom of the first with junior center fielder Jessica Clements swatting a two-run homer that drove in senior right fielder Juju Sargent.

Held scoreless in the second, the Cougars furthered their lead to 15-2 in the top of the third after third baseman Maddie Udall hit a three-run homer.

BYU, which set a new Cal Poly opponent record for single-game runs, then added a four-run fourth inning.

Clements completed the scoring during the bottom of the fourth, driving home senior pinch runner Kenny Litana with a two-out single.

The Mustangs close Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic play on Sunday, Feb. 25 with an 11:30 a.m. doubleheader against No. 21 California and Fresno State.
