CATHEDRAL CITY – The Cal Poly softball program led both No. 21 California and Fresno State during Sunday's final afternoon at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic, but the Mustangs sustained successive 3-2 defeats at Big League Dreams Park.
During Sunday's opening matchup with 21st-ranked California (15-1), Cal Poly (7-7) went in front at the first opportunity as right fielder Juju Sargent and center fielder Jessica Clements opened the game with successive singles. Shortstop Xiara Diaz followed with a sacrifice bunt before Sargent scored on a passed ball for a 1-0 advantage.
The Mustangs stranded baserunners during the second, third and fourth innings before doubling the lead in the fifth as junior catcher Julia Barnett singled with one down to bring home Clements.
Handed the lead before throwing a pitch, junior righthander Kate Judy (3-4) – who struck out three and conceded just five hits – stranded the California bases loaded to complete the first inning. She retired the Golden Bears in order to close the second and third innings and conceded just one hit in the fourth before California surged ahead with a three-run fifth inning, comprised by a run-scoring base hit from third baseman Tatum Anzaldo and successive one-out, RBI bunt singles from shortstop Acacia Anders and second baseman Elon Butler.
During Sunday's second matchup with Fresno State (11-4), the Bulldogs struck the opening blow during the bottom of the second as catcher Kennedy Bunker homered with one down.
Cal Poly was kept to just one hit and two baserunners through the opening five innings before consecutive two-out, run-scoring singles from Diaz and sophomore left fielder Kiara Blanchard handed the Mustangs a 2-1 advantage.
Mustang starting sophomore righthander Sophia Ramuno (1-2) faced just three Bulldogs over the minimum through the opening five innings, conceding only three hits. Fresno State, however, pushed across the decisive two runs during the bottom half of the sixth through a passed ball and sacrifice fly. Cal Poly was then retired in order to close the matchup.
Cal Poly returns to action at the March 1-3 California Baptist-hosted Lancer Joust. The Mustangs open their portion of the tournament on Friday, March 1 against Idaho State (10 a.m.) and California Baptist (3 p.m.).
