Ramuno and Diaz Lead the Way in 2-1 Comeback Over CBU

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Just three days removed from the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic, Cal Poly got back in the win column on an unexpected Thursday night game that was forcibly moved up due to incoming weather on Saturday. The Mustangs trailed by one run in the first inning but never looked back, completing a tight comeback during the fifth inning with a 2-1 stunner in Riverside.
Sophia Ramuno pitched arguably her finest game of the season, playing a complete game while allowing just five hits and no runs through the final six innings. This was Ramuno's third complete game, which leads the team alongside her pacing the Mustang pitching staff with a 1.47 WHIP, only 36 hits allowed, and .269 opponent batting average.
Xiara Diaz was flawless from the infield's most physically demanding position, as the senior shortstop made three notable, highlight-worthy plays in what proved to be a defensive battle to the very last out. Her over-the-shoulder snag ended the game with two outs and the potential walk-off California Baptist runs on first and second.
The Lancers jumped out to an early lead after a double from third baseman Kate Penberthy that drove in the game's first run. However, Ramuno stood tall in the second inning and set the tone with a three-up, three-down frame in response.
Cal Poly had a hopeful opportunity to nab some runs in the third inning with Mia Perez and Sehren Martinez on second and third via back-to-back walks and a sac bunt. However, CBU managed to squeeze out of the jam and come back the next few innings with runners in scoring position of their own. At every turn, Ramuno came up clutch with the help of some crafty defensive plays, including catcher Julia Barnett gunning down her sixth would-be base stealer of the year.
Stringing together some hits in the fifth inning, the Mustangs got hot and Mylina Garza uncorked a sliding double to the warning track, which allowed her pinch runner substituted Jade Contapay to score from second on the very next play thanks to a Mia Perez sac bunt. With the game tied, Jessica Clements wasted no time in tacking on another run as she tallied her 2nd hit of the game and team-leading 27th of the young season.
As the Lancers prepared to answer in the bottom of the fifth, a ground ball was hit straight to Xiara Diaz who had the vision and focus to throw out the potential game-tying run at home as opposed to the easy out at first, which saved the Cal Poly lead and would come to be one of the game's best plays.
Cal Poly held on for the victory after Diaz's incredible seventh-inning catch for the final out, snapping the five-game losing skid and giving the Mustangs a glowing start to the weekend's tournament.
The Mustangs continue with doubleheader games two and three of the Lancer Joust at 10 a.m. against St. John's and at 12:30 p.m. versus Idaho State.
