Cal Poly Opens Day 2 with Victory Before Splitting Doubleheader
3/1/2024 6:30:00 PM | Softball
RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The Mustangs sit 2-1 in the Lancer Joust after splitting their day two doubleheader. Juju Sargent led the way in the 10 a.m. game versus St. John's with a 3-for-5, 2 RBI day alongside a pair of doubles to beat the Red Storm 6-4. In the second game, Cal Poly traded lead changes with Idaho State the entire afternoon but fell to a Tigers 5-4 walk-off despite Jessica Clements' perfect 4-for-4 day.
During Saturday's seventh-inning win over St. John's (6-10), both the Mustangs and Red Storm opened the game firing on all cylinders. St. John's got its first three batters on base, which included the RBI double that made the game 1-0 heading into the second inning.
The Mustangs responded with a huge 3-run stretch as the star of the game, Juju Sargent, hit a 2-RBI double to center field before Xiara Diaz took a sac fly to score the third of the inning. St. John's managed a three-run homer at the bottom of the frame to stay ahead.
After those last runs, Cal Poly had nothing but answers for the Red Storm as just two innings later, reigning Big West Field Player of the Week Kiara Blanchard single deep to left field, bringing Sargent and Jade Contapay across home plate.
Kenny Litana stepped up in the seventh inning to lengthen the lead with her first RBI of the year, capping off easily her finest game of the season, going 2-for-3. With some help from a scoreless day in the bullpen, Paige Maier and Sophia Ramuno combined for almost four shutout innings and just two hits allowed.
During the second leg of the doubleheader against Idaho State (11-6), with the tables turned compared to the previous battle, Cal Poly opened up with a first inning lead after Kiara Blanchard's sac fly RBI to bring Sargent home. Although the Mustangs had an opportunity to add more in the inning, Idaho State managed out of the jam.
A throwing error in the third inning allowed Idaho State back into the game with one running coming directly from the RBI and another scoring after the throw. It would take until the sixth inning for Cal Poly to respond as a defensive duel ensued with back-to-back 1-2-3's in the fourth inning and a near-run from Cal Poly in the fifth.
In the sixth inning, Contapay managed to score year again as Mylina Garza hit her first RBI of the day. Shortly after the tie, Kiara Blanchard quickly shot the Mustangs into the lead during the seventh with her 4th RBI in two games, scoring Sargent. Julia Barnett increased the gap to two runs with her right field single RBI.
In dramatic fashion, Idaho State dinged one out of the park for a 3-run walk off home rune to center field, shutting down the attempted Cal Poly comeback and forcing the Mustangs to accept a doubleheader split.
The Mustangs get a one-day break due to weather concerns and will finish up the Lancer Joust with another doubleheader on Sunday as they get rematches with both Idaho State and California Baptist at 12:30 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. respectively.
