Mustangs Edged by Rutgers Friday at Mary Nutter Classic

CATHEDRAL CITY – Junior second baseman Mia Perez homered and five different Mustangs drove home runs Friday afternoon, but the Cal Poly softball program conceded a seven-run third inning to Rutgers and opened the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic at Big League Dreams Park with an 8-7 loss to the Scarlet Knights.
Facing Rutgers (8-2) for just the second time in its 50-year history, Cal Poly (7-3) cancelled out Friday's opening run in the top half of the second by the Scarlet Knights during the bottom half after junior designated player Caroline Allman plated Garza with a sacrifice fly.
The Scarlet Knights, however, countered with seven runs in the top of the third, comprised by a two-run homer from center fielder Morgan Smith, a two-run single by designated player Kayla Bock and a bases-clearing double from shortstop Kyleigh Sand.
The Mustangs though began to chip away at their 8-1 deficit in the fourth with Perez's second homer of the season also bringing home sophomore third baseman Mylina Garza.
Into the fifth, senior shortstop Xiara Diaz (above) cut the Rutgers lead to 8-4 with a one-out single to score junior center fielder Jessica Clements.
Facing the same deficit heading into the bottom of the seventh, Diaz plated senior right fielder Juju Sargent with a fielder's choice before scoring herself after a Garza single. Another run-scoring fielder's choice – this time from sophomore left fielder Kiara Blanchard to bring in senior pinch runner Kenny Litana – closed the gap to 8-7.
With two on and two down, however, freshman pinch runner Sehren Martinez was forced out at second on an Allman grounder to end the matchup.
Starting for Cal Poly, junior righthander Kate Judy (3-2) took the loss after allowing five runs. Sophomore righthander Sophia Ramuno struck out three in four and two-thirds innings of relief.
Cal Poly resumes Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic action on Saturday, Feb. 24 against Illinois (9:30 a.m.) and BYU (5 p.m.).
