Carter’s Double-Double Propels Mustangs Past CSUN Saturday
12/7/2024 5:02:00 PM | Women's Basketball
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. — Mustang sophomore forward Mary Carter matched career highs in both points and rebounds as she recorded her first double-double of the season to help lead the Cal Poly women's basketball team past CSUN on the road Saturday, 58-45.
Carter finished with 18 points and 10 rebounds to help the Mustangs (4-5, 1-1 Big West) pick up their first win of early conference play. Carter was 4-9 from three, half of Cal Poly's eight made threes in the game.
Redshirt sophomore forward Sierra Lichtie also had a strong game, posting 17 points and eight rebounds. Senior guard Annika Shah was 3-8 from downtown as she added 13 points for a Cal Poly team that defensively limited the Matadors (2-6, 0-2 Big West) to 26 percent shooting from the field and 11 percent shooting from three.
Cal Poly made four of its threes in the first quarter and forced nine CSUN turnovers as the Mustangs finished the opening quarter with an 8-0 run to take an 18-10 lead into the second quarter.
The Mustangs continued to push their lead up even more in the second quarter, at one point leading by 15 at 27-12. They went into the halftime break ahead 31-19.
The Matadors opened the second half with a 7-2 run to cut the Cal Poly lead down to eight. After getting the lead down to seven later in the third, Cal Poly went on a 10-2 run that spanned nearly halfway into the fourth quarter as the Mustangs pulled away 53-37 and never looked back.
Cal Poly will be off next week before going back to non-conference play for three more games. Their next game will be Dec. 16 when the Mustangs head down to Los Angeles to face No. 1 UCLA. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
