Mustangs Swept Saturday at Big West Leader Long Beach State

LONG BEACH — The Cal Poly softball program loaded the bases with one down in the top of the seventh inning but, held to just one hit by Long Beach State starter Shannon Haddad, the Mustangs opened a three-game series and Saturday doubleheader at the LBSU Softball Complex with a 5-1 setback. Cal Poly also fell in Saturday's second game, 2-0, despite a combined five-hitter from sophomore Kate Judy and freshman Sophia Ramuno.
During Saturday's opening game, Big West Conference leading Long Beach State (23-19, 13-4) — held to one baserunner in the first inning — tallied all the runs required for victory during the second as center fielder Lilyanna Martinez and designated player Cam Cecil bookended a four-run effort with RBI singles.
After junior first baseman Kai Barrett produced Cal Poly's lone hit of the matchup with a one-out single in the second, the Mustangs (14-18, 7-10) found their only run of the afternoon in the third. With Cal Poly's middle infielders — juniors Mia Perez and Xiara Diaz — drawing successive leadoff walks, sophomore center fielder Jessica Clements pushed both into scoring position with a fly out. Junior right fielder Juju Sargent then plated Perez with a ground out to get Cal Poly on the scoreboard.
Taking over in the circle for Mustang starting sophomore Paige Maier (3-5) with two down in the second, Ramuno kept Long Beach State hitless and without a runner past second base during the third and fourth innings. The Beach though went up 5-1 in the fifth with second baseman Jacquelyn Bickar scoring on a double-steal attempt.
Haddad (10-8) retired Cal Poly in order during the fourth, fifth and sixth before hitting sophomore catcher Julia Barnett with the opening pitch of the seventh. After Barrett drew a full-count walk, Haddad hit sophomore pinch hitter Malia Mah to load the bases. Haddad, however, recovered to force a Perez pop up and Diaz fly out to end the initial matchup.
During game No. 2, Cal Poly was retired in order during the top of the first and Long Beach State loaded the bases without an out during the bottom half. Making just her second start of the year, Judy (0-1) induced a fielder's choice from first baseman Mikayla Ceballos to record the first out at home, but Martinez followed by plating Cecil for the game's opening run with a sacrifice fly. Catcher Thea Thies next added a run-scoring single as The Beach departed the first with the game's only runs.
Long Beach State starter Sophia Fernandez (5-4) retired 17 of the first 19 Mustang hitters faced with freshman third baseman Mylina Garza's second-inning single counting as Cal Poly's lone hit through the opening five innings. With two outs in the top of the sixth, however, Sargent and sophomore designated player Caroline Allman strung together successive singles. Fernandez, however, forced a fly out from Barnett to end Cal Poly's best scoring opportunity.
Relieving Judy in the circle to start the third, Ramuno kept Long Beach State to just one hit and struck out three in four innings.
Fernandez then retired Cal Poly in order during the seventh to complete Long Beach State's sweep.
