Triples Lift Cal Poly Past Long Beach State in Series Finale, 2-0
4/23/2023 5:34:00 PM | Softball
LONG BEACH – The Cal Poly softball program was held to two hits by a pair of Long Beach State pitchers Sunday afternoon, but successive two-out triples from junior right fielder Juju Sargent and sophomore designated player Caroline Allman (above) lifted the Mustangs to a 2-0, series-finale victory against The Beach.
Freshman righthander Sophia Ramuno (10-9) and sophomore reliever Kate Judy combined to scatter 10 hits and stranded 10 for Cal Poly (15-18, 8-10), which was kept to one baserunner by Long Beach State starter Samantha Fowler (3-4) until sophomore left fielder Jade Contapay drew a five-pitch walk to lead off the third. Contapay was erased two batters later with a fielder's choice from sophomore center fielder Jessica Clements, but Sargent followed with a run-scoring triple to right center.
Allman then lined the first pitch from Fowler into left field and handed Ramuno a 2-0 lead entering the bottom of the third. Ramuno, who conceded eight hits in five and one-third innings, didn't allow a Beach baserunner past second until the fourth, when the hosts strung together three straight hits with two down. The last single from shortstop Selena Perez, however, resulted in Contapay throwing out third baseman Carly Robbins at home with junior catcher Julia Barnett applying the inning-ending tag.
Retired in order by Ramuno to complete the fifth, Long Beach State loaded the bases with no outs in the sixth. Called to the circle in relief, however, Judy forced Robbins to line into a double play before first baseman Mikayla Ceballos grounded out to end the inning.
Into the seventh, Judy and Ramuno – back in the circle to face the final two Long Beach State hitters – stranded two baserunners to close Cal Poly's win.
Cal Poly's victory knocked Long Beach State (23-20, 13-5) out of first place in the Big West standings, a result that handed Cal State Fullerton (27-16, 14-4) a one-game lead at the top with nine regular season matchups remaining.
Playing two of its final three Big West series at home, Cal Poly hosts Cal State Fullerton for a three-game, April 28-29 series. Action gets underway with a 4 p.m. doubleheader on Friday, April 28.
