SAN LUIS OBISPO – Playing half of its final four Big West series away from home, the Cal Poly softball program – winners of four straight – visits conference co-leading Long Beach State for a Saturday, April 22 doubleheader (3 p.m.) and Sunday, April 23 single matchup (1 p.m.). Having risen to seventh place following a three-game home sweep of CSU Bakersfield (April 15-16), Cal Poly (14-16, 7-8) sits just four games behind Long Beach State (21-18, 11-4) and fellow Big West leader Cal State Fullerton (24-16, 11-4) with 12 regular season games remaining. Long Beach State, meanwhile, enters the series having won four of its last five matchups to keep pace in the title race.

CAL POLY VERSUS LONG BEACH STATE: The Beach had captured four straight series against Cal Poly before the Mustangs won two of three games last season to secure the program's first home series victory against Long Beach State since 2009. Seeking its first series win at Long Beach State since 2016, Cal Poly trails in the all-time series, 53-31, dating to the first meeting between the two programs on April 22, 1978.
CONDON MAKES HISTORY: Ranked seventh in Big West Conference history with 444 career victories, 19th-year head coach Jenny Condon became the program's all-time victories leader with Cal Poly's 7-0 home win against CSU Bakersfield (April 16). Surpassing Lisa Boyer (who won 443 games from 1989-2004), Condon has accounted for 38.5 (444 of 1153) percent of the total victories in Cal Poly softball history. In Cal Poly Athletics Department history, only current baseball head coach Larry Lee (2003-) has overseen more victories (627) than Condon.
LEADOFF BY EXAMPLE: Cal Poly's leadoff batter in all 78 games since the start of her career last spring, sophomore center fielder Jessica Clements enters the program's April 22-23 series at Long Beach State ranked second in the Big West and 59th among NCAA Division I players with a .400 (40-for-100) batting average. Having reached base in 20 straight games and with a 13-game hitting streak, Clements ranks third among Big West players with a .496 on-base percentage, sixth with 40 hits, eighth with seven doubles and 10th with 22 runs and a .520 slugging percentage while also leading Cal Poly with nine multi-hit games. Having reached base in all but one game this season, Clements has hit safely in 26 of 30 appearances – including a 5-for-5 effort against Hawai'i (April 8) that matched an all-time Big West record for single game hits. The leading hitter in Cal Poly's 49-year program history with a .398 (103-for-259) mark, Clements has produced 27 collegiate multi-hit outings.
RAMUNO RISES IN THE CIRCLE: With 103 strikeouts – the fourth highest total among Big West pitchers and shy 48 of breaking into the top 10 single season leaders list in program history – Cal Poly freshman righthander Sophia Ramuno ranks sixth among conference pitchers in victories (nine), eighth in starts (15) and ninth in innings pitched (96.1). Featuring a 2.5-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio, Ramuno is averaging 1.07 strikeouts per inning. She produced a career best 10 strikeouts during a March 25 victory at UC Riverside while enjoying eight-strikeout performances against Nevada (Feb. 12), Fresno State (March 3) and CSUN (March 19).
ALLMAN JOY: Now second in Cal Poly's lineup with a .314 (27-for-86) batting average, sophomore designated player Caroline Allman enters the April 22-23 series at Long Beach State having reached base safely in 11 straight games and hit safely in 10 of the last 11 outings. BARNETT'S SUPERB SOPHOMORE EFFORT: The 106th toughest Division I player to strike out, sophomore catcher Julia Barnett has been fanned just six times in 95 at-bats and 106 plate appearances. Having reached base in 22 of 30 games and hit safely in all but 10 matchups this season, Barnett – limited to just four hits in 15 appearances last year – ranks second in Cal Poly's lineup with 35 total bases, third with 28 hits and fourth with a .295 (28-for-95) batting average and six multi-hit games. With career high three-hit efforts during wins against North Dakota (Feb. 11), Idaho State (Feb. 21) and at UC Riverside (March 25), Barnett belted her first career homer during an opening-day victory versus North Dakota and second at UC Santa Barbara (April 1). Defensively, Barnett owns a .989 mark in 182 chances.
CAL POLY SELECTED SIXTH IN BIG WEST PRESEASON POLL: With sophomore outfielder Jessica Clements earning a position on the preseason coaches' team, the Cal Poly softball program was selected for a sixth-place finish in the 2023 Big West Preseason Poll. Cal Poly collected 40 total points in the poll and one first-place vote to finish just one point behind CSUN. Defending Big West champion Cal State Fullerton was selected to retain its title with 80 points and eight of 10 first-place votes.
