Condon Sets Program Wins Mark as Cal Poly Sweeps CSU Bakersfield
4/16/2023 3:59:00 PM | Softball
SAN LUIS OBISPO – Cal Poly softball 19th-year head coach Jenny Condon became the program's all-time leader for victories Sunday afternoon as a 7-0 triumph by the Mustangs against CSU Bakersfield marked her 444th career win and completed a three-game sweep of the Roadrunners.
With Sunday's historic victory, Condon surpassed Lisa Boyer (1989-2004) for both total wins by a Mustang softball head coach and total victories by any female head coach in Cal Poly Athletics Department history. A three-time Big West Coach of the Year honoree, Condon ranks seventh in conference history for career wins.
In the circle Sunday for Cal Poly (14-16, 7-8), starting sophomore righthander Paige Maier (3-4) allowed just two hits in five innings. Sophomore righthander Sophia Ramuno then struck out three in two innings of one-hit relief. CSU Bakersfield advanced just one baserunner to third against the pair.
Cal Poly found all of the runs required for victory during the bottom of the first with junior right fielder Juju Sargent and sophomore designated player Caroline Allman producing successive one-out singles. A groundout from sophomore catcher Julia Barnett moved both Mustangs into scoring position before CSU Bakersfield starting righthander Brianna Sanchez (5-12) unleashed a wild pitch that brought home Sargent. Recovering the errant pitch from the backstop, Roadrunners catcher Maya Molina-Villareal threw past Sanchez covering home and Allman crossed the plate without a challenge for a 2-0 lead.
Stranding three total baserunners between the second and fourth innings – including leaving freshman left fielder Kiara Blanchard on to end the fourth following her first career triple – Cal Poly added four more runs in the fifth to go up 6-0 with Sargent initially supplying a two-run double that plated junior shortstop Xiara Diaz and sophomore center fielder Jessica Clements. Sargent later scored on a second throwing error from Molina-Villareal behind the plate before Blanchard plated Allman with a sacrifice fly.
The Mustangs completed the scoring in the sixth with an Allman sacrifice fly bringing home Clements.
Cal Poly resumes action with a three-game, April 22-23 series at Long Beach State. Series action begins with a 3 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday, April 22.
