Mustangs Drop Sunday Pair to Close Judi Garman Classic

FULLERTON – Two-run hits from sophomore center fielder Jessica Clements (above) and junior right fielder Juju Sargent twice provided the Cal Poly softball program leads against No. 15 LSU Sunday morning at the Cal State Fullerton-hosted Judi Garman Classic, but the Mustangs were undone by a 10-run fourth inning from the Tigers and sustained a 12-4, five-inning setback. Cal Poly also held an early five-run lead during Sunday's second matchup against San Jose State before falling, 11-6.
During Sunday's opener against No. 15 LSU (20-1), each side limited the other to a hit in the first inning before Cal Poly (7-8) grabbed the game's initial lead in the top of the second as Clements produced a two-out, two-run double to left center that plated junior shortstop Xiara Diaz and junior catcher Kai Barrett.
The Tigers, however, equalized at the first opportunity as right fielder McKenzie Redoutey followed a leadoff double by first baseman Raeleen Gutierrez with a home run to left field.
With Cal Poly starting righthander Ally Robbins (0-1) holding LSU scoreless to complete the third, Cal Poly surged back ahead in the top half of the fourth with Diaz drawing a leadoff walk ahead of a one-out Barrett double. Following an LSU pitching change and with two down, Sargent delivered a two-run single to hand the Mustangs the 4-2 advantage.
LSU, however, immediately tied the matchup once more through Karli Petty's leadoff walk and Ali Newland's two-run homer. The Tigers proceeded to cross the plate eight more times to set up the run-rule victory, an effort highlighted by a Petty grand slam.
Tigers reliever Ali Kilponen kept Cal Poly to a just a single from Mustangs freshman left fielder Kiara Blanchard in the top of the fifth to close the matchup.
Clements and Barrett co-led Cal Poly with two hits apiece against LSU.
During Sunday's second matchup against San Jose State (7-12), Cal Poly stranded three baserunners during the opening two innings. San Jose State, however, opened the bottom half of the third with back-to-back errors before starting righthander Lacie Ham (3-4) hit Mustang sophomore catcher Julia Barnett. Sophomore second baseman Caroline Allman and Blanchard followed with successive run-scoring walks before Diaz enjoyed a two-run double. Barrett scored Diaz later in the inning with an RBI single as Cal Poly took a 5-0 lead into the top of the fourth.
Cal Poly starting righthander Sophia Ramuno (5-4) faced just two Spartan batters over the minimum until the fourth, when San Jose State exploded for an eight-run effort capped by a three-run homer from right fielder Ashley Rico.
Catcher Reina Zermeno hit a solo homer for San Jose State in the top of the sixth before Cal Poly cancelled out the run in the bottom half with Allman singling home Sargent for a 9-6 deficit.
The Spartans, however, added two more runs in the seventh to finalize the scoring.
