Robbins Earns First Career Win; Cal Poly Splits Saturday Doubleheader

SAN LUIS OBISPSO – Freshman righthander Sophia Ramuno struck out six CSUN hitters during Saturday's Big West Conference opener against CSUN, but the Cal Poly softball program was limited to just one hit as the Mustangs dropped game No. 1 of the doubleheader at Bob Janssen Field to the Matadors, 5-0. Cal Poly, however, rebounded for a 1-0 victory in game No. 2 as freshman righthander Ally Robbins struck out four in a complete-game effort to earn her first collegiate win.
During Saturday's Big West and doubleheader opener, CSUN (9-13, 1-1) found the eventual game-winning run in the top of the second inning as Matadors first baseman Alexis Garcia followed third baseman Shaylan Whatman's one-out double with a run-scoring up the middle.
CSUN doubled its lead in the fourth with center fielder Maiya Alemania tripling to lead off before scoring through a one-out sacrifice fly from pinch hitter Maddie Padilla.
The Matadors then extended the advantage to 5-0 in the sixth after freshman Raegan Jackson hit her second career home run over the right field wall.
In the circle, CSUN starting righthander Isabella Alonso (4-1) kept Cal Poly hitless through the opening three innings and faced the minimum number of Mustang hitters until sophomore center fielder Jessica Clements singled to open the bottom of the fourth. Clements, however, was immediately cut down on a fielder's choice from junior right fielder Juju Sargent who, in turn, was stranded by Alonso.
Alonso, who threw just 64 pitches in the complete-game victory, closed the game by retiring 11 straight Mustangs.
During Saturday's second matchup, Cal Poly (8-9, 1-1) equalized its opening-game hit total just two spots into the lineup as Sargent – after Clements was hit in the leadoff spot – produced a run-scoring double to hand the Mustangs their 1-0 lead.
After retiring CSUN in order during the top of the first, Robbins (1-1) benefitted in the top half of the second from Clements throwing out Alemania at home plate from center field. Robbins then stranded the CSUN bases loaded to preserve Cal Poly's 1-0 edge entering the bottom of the second.
Held to one hit between the second and third, Cal Poly stranded two in scoring position to close the fourth.
Robbins, however, made Cal Poly's one-run edge stand after stranding one Matador in the third and two in the fourth before retiring CSUN in order during the fifth. She then stranded Matadors at the corner bases in the sixth after Cal Poly freshman left fielder Kiara Blanchard caught a Jackson flyout on the warning track.
Robbins struck out CSUN designated player Kaylee Escutia to end the matchup in the top of the seventh, leaving the potential game-tying run on first.
