Mustangs Edged Sunday in Seventh by CSUN, 2-1
3/19/2023 6:39:00 PM | Softball
SAN LUIS OBISPO – Starting freshman righthander Sophia Ramuno (above) matched a career high with eight strikeouts Sunday afternoon, but the third and final hit she conceded against CSUN was a two-run homer to Matadors center fielder Maiya Alemania in the top of the seventh inning as the Mustangs closed a three-game series with a 2-1 setback at Bob Janssen Field.
Ramuno (5-6) kept CSUN (10-13, 2-1) hitless through the opening three innings. CSUN twice placed two Matadors in scoring position in the top of the fourth before the Mustangs threw out left fielder Mikayla Carman – caught between home plate and third base on a grounder – and Ramuno earned a pop out from Alemania to keep the matchup scoreless.
Striking out at least one batter in six of seven innings, Ramuno retired the Matadors in order during the fifth and sixth.
Limited to just one hit through the opening four innings by CSUN starting righthander Isabella Alonso, Cal Poly (8-10, 1-2) loaded the bases with two down in the fourth before a fly out ended the threat. Cal Poly then stranded two of its nine baserunners in the sixth after freshman third baseman Mylina Garza doubled with one down.
Into the seventh, Ramuno hit Matadors leadoff batter Gizella Vargas-Sandoval and, two spots later, Alemania hit her first home run of the season over the right field wall.
Cal Poly halved its deficit during the bottom half of the seventh with sophomore center fielder Jessica Clements following junior second baseman Xiara Diaz's one-out single with a run-scoring double. The Mustangs, however, left two more on to close the matchup.
Cal Poly resumes action with a three-game, March 25-26 series at UC Riverside. The series gets underway with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday, March 25.
