CAL POLY VERSUS NORTH DAKOTA: The Mustangs are undefeated versus North Dakota in three all-time matchups, sweeping a March 3, 2008 home doubleheader (3-0, 11-2) from the Hawks before earning another 3-0 home decision during the 2018 Mustang Classic.
CAL POLY VERSUS NEVADA: The seventh ever opponent in Cal Poly's history with the first meeting occurring on May 1, 1975, Nevada leads the all-time series versus the Mustangs, 16-9. The two programs most recently split a pair of 2-1 decisions during last March's Mustang Classic. Previously, Cal Poly topped Nevada twice (May 17-18, 2017) to capture the National Invitational Softball Championship Region 1 postseason title (Cal Poly advanced to the NISC Championship Round at Liberty, finishing fourth nationally).
CONDON ON VERGE OF HISTORY: Ranked seventh in Big West Conference history with 430 career victories entering the 2023 season, 19th-year head coach Jenny Condon requires just 14 more Mustang wins to overtake Lisa Boyer (1989-04) for total victories by a Cal Poly softball head coach. Condon (430) and Boyer (443) have combined for 76.6 (873 of 1,140) percent of the victories in Cal Poly softball history. In Cal Poly Athletics Department history, only current baseball head coach Larry Lee (2003-) has managed more victories (614) than Boyer or Condon.
CAL POLY SELECTED SIXTH IN BIG WEST PRESEASON POLL: With sophomore outfielder Jessica Clements earning a position on the preseason coaches' team, the Cal Poly softball program was selected for a sixth-place finish in the 2023 Big West Preseason Poll. Cal Poly collected 40 total points in the poll and one first-place vote to finish just one point behind CSUN. Defending Big West champion Cal State Fullerton was selected to retain its title with 80 points and eight of 10 first-place votes. Last year's runner-up, Long Beach State, finished second with 68 points and the remaining first-place vote. Hawai'i (59 points) and UC San Diego (56) finished third and fourth in the poll, respectively.
THE COMPANY YOU KEEP: Five of Cal Poly's opening 15 games occur versus programs ranked or receiving votes in the preseason edition of the USA Today/NFCA Division I Top 25 Coaches Poll. After facing Missouri (96 votes in preseason poll) on Feb. 23, Cal Poly meets Iowa State (three votes) on Feb. 24, No. 24 Oregon (March 3), No. 2 UCLA (March 4) and No. 25 LSU (March 5). Cal Poly also hosts defending Big West champion Cal State Fullerton (one vote) April 28-29.
LOOKING AHEAD (FEB. 21): Following a nine-day break, Cal Poly concludes its season-opening, six-game home stand on Tuesday, Feb. 21 with a 3 p.m. doubleheader against Idaho State. The doubleheader opener marks the 2,200th game in Cal Poly program history.
