SAN LUIS OBISPO – Righthander Paige Maier (above) struck out a career high eight hitters and fellow sophomore Julia Barnett hit her first career home run Friday afternoon as the Cal Poly softball program opened the 2023 regular season and its inaugural Central Coast Classic at Bob Janssen Field with a 3-0 shutout of North Dakota.
Held hitless through the opening three innings by North Dakota starting righthander Jackie Albrecht (0-1), Cal Poly opened the fourth with a leadoff walk from junior shortstop Xiara Diaz before Barnett singled to place Mustangs at the corner bases. Junior first baseman Kai Barrett next singled through the left side of the infield to plate Diaz for a 1-0 lead.
Back in the circle, Maier (1-0) produced her initial strikeout in the first before adding three more in the second. She conceded just two hits, allowing singles in the second and third. Without letting a baserunner past second, Maier stranded six total and retired 13 of the final 15 hitters faced.
In Cal Poly's half of the sixth, sophomore designated player Caroline Allman reached on a leadoff error before Barnett handed the Mustangs a 3-0 advantage by homering over the center field wall.
Cal Poly continues Central Coast Classic action on Saturday, Feb. 11 against Nevada (3 p.m.) and North Dakota (5:30 p.m.). The complete tournament schedule is below.
