Cal Poly Sweeps Saturday Pair at Central Coast Classic
2/11/2023 10:26:00 PM | Softball
SAN LUIS OBISPO – Making her collegiate debut for the Cal Poly softball program Saturday evening, freshman righthander Sophia Ramuno allowed just one Nevada hit and struck out six in four and one-third innings of relief as the Mustangs secured a 3-2 victory at the Central Coast Classic. Ramuno then returned in game No. 2 of the doubleheader at Bob Janssen Field to allow just two hits in five innings as Cal Poly prevailed against North Dakota in six innings, 8-0.
During Saturday's opener against Nevada – delayed two hours by afternoon rain – Mustang starting righthander Paige Maier stranded two Nevada baserunners in the top of the first and Cal Poly surged ahead 1-0 during the bottom half as junior shortstop Xiara Diaz plated sophomore center fielder Jessica Clements with a one-out sacrifice fly.
Maier stranded the Nevada bases loaded in the second before the Wolf Pack (2-1) tied the game in the third through right fielder Gabby Herrera's leadoff homer. The Wolf Pack then went ahead 2-1 after Maier loaded the bases before walking second baseman Maile Olsen.
Cal Poly (3-0), however, required just another inning to regain the lead with junior first baseman Kai Barrett and Clements supplying run-scoring hits in the fourth for a 3-2 advantage.
Taking over for Maier with two down and the bases loaded in the third inning, Ramuno (2-0) retired 10 straight to begin her college career. In the top of the seventh, however, Nevada loaded the bases for a third time through a Mustang fielding error, a Ramuno walk and an infield single by pinch hitter Madison Clark. Ramuno recovered though with successive strikeouts before forcing a game-ending pop up from Wolf Pack left fielder Andrea Lira.
During Saturday's second matchup against North Dakota (0-4), Cal Poly secured the game's only lead in the bottom half of the second as Barrett singled home sophomore designated player Caroline Allman with one down. The Mustangs then loaded the bases against Fighting Hawks starting righthander Camryn Lasota (0-2) before Clements drew a bases-loaded walk and junior right fielder Juju Sargent brought home Barrett with a sacrifice fly to run Cal Poly's lead to 3-0.
Cal Poly added single runs in the third with freshman third baseman Mylina Garza producing her first collegiate home run and the fourth after Sargent delivered a two-out single that plated sophomore pinch runner Jade Contapay. Allman then placed Cal Poly up 6-0 in the fifth with a run-scoring single.
After conceding North Dakota's initial hit in the second, Ramuno retired nine of the next 11 hitters before giving way to another freshman righthander making her debut, Amy Ross. Ross allowed just one hit working the top of the sixth.
Cal Poly added its final two runs in the bottom half of the sixth for the run-rule win.
