Mustangs Edged in Seventh by Nevada to Close Central Coast Classic

SAN LUIS OBISPO – Freshman righthander Sophia Ramuno (above) struck out a career best eight hitters Sunday afternoon, but Nevada second baseman Maile Olsen broke a 1-1 stalemate with a leadoff homer in the seventh inning and the Cal Poly softball program closed its inaugural Central Coast Classic with a 4-1 setback at Bob Janssen Field.
Ramuno (2-1) retired 10 of the first 12 hitters she faced Sunday – including striking out the side in the second. She kept Nevada hitless until Wolf Pack catcher Charli Hawkins tripled with one down in the fourth. Ramuno, however, retired the next two Nevada hitters to keep the matchup scoreless.
At the plate, Cal Poly (3-1) was held hitless by Nevada starting righthander Blake Craft until freshman left fielder Kiara Blanchard doubled with two down in the fourth. Three pitches later, sophomore designated player Caroline Allman singled up the middle to bring home Blanchard for a 1-0 lead.
Nevada, however, tied the matchup at the first opportunity with center fielder Chelie Senini singling up the middle with two down to score left fielder Madison Clark from second base.
Into the seventh, Olsen lined Ramuno's first pitch over the left field wall. The Wolf Pack later loaded the bases with two down before shortstop Haylee Engelbrecht delivered a two-run single to complete the 4-1 scoreline.
Cal Poly stranded its eighth and final baserunner in the seventh to close the matchup.
Following a nine-day break, Cal Poly resumes action on Tuesday, Feb. 21 with a 3 p.m. home doubleheader against Idaho State.
