SAN LUIS OBISPO – Following a nine-day break, the Cal Poly softball program plays the 2,200th game in program history during the opening matchup of a Tuesday, Feb. 21 home doubleheader against Idaho State.
First pitch from Bob Janssen Field is 3 p.m. as Dan Gillman returns to provide audio play-by-play HERE with live stats also available via GoPoly.com HERE.
Beginning the year with six successive home games for the first time since 2004, Cal Poly (3-1) began the 2023 season with three straight victories before falling to Nevada, 4-1 (Feb. 12), to close the inaugural Central Coast Classic (Feb. 10-12).
Idaho State (4-5), meanwhile, saw an early four-game winning streak halted with Sunday setbacks to Iowa State (7-4) and host Fresno State (10-0, five innings). The Bengals were picked to finish fifth in the six-team Big Sky Conference preseason coaches poll.
Sophomore catcher Julia Barnett emerged as Cal Poly's leading hitter during the opening weekend of action, batting .600 (6-for-10) during the Central Coast Classic – an effort that included an opening-day home run (above) during a 3-0 victory versus North Dakota and a three-hit performance in a second win against the Fighting Hawks (Feb. 11).
Cal Poly's leading returning hitter from last season, center fielder Jessica Clements, takes a .364 batting average into Tuesday's twinbill against Idaho State, as does fellow sophomore and designated player Caroline Allman.
In the circle, freshman righthander Sophia Ramuno (2-1) compiled a team leading 1.34 ERA in three appearances and 15.2 innings pitched during the Central Coast Classic. Striking out six in her collegiate debut to earn the victory in Cal Poly's 3-2 decision against Nevada (Feb. 11), Ramuno added a career best eight strikeouts against the Wolf Pack the following day.
Through 49 seasons as a varsity program, 2,199 games and 1,143 all-time victories, Cal Poly has faced Idaho State just twice prior, splitting a pair of matchups as part of the Feb. 23-26, 2017 Bulldog Classic in Fresno.
Following Tuesday's doubleheader, Cal Poly resumes action at the Feb. 23-26 Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic at Big League Dreams in Cathedral City, Calif. Cal Poly's five-game schedule at the tournament opens on Thursday, Feb. 23 versus Texas Tech (10 a.m.) and Iowa State (12:30 p.m.).
