Mustangs Prevail in Bottom of Ninth versus San Diego, 6-5
2/24/2023 6:35:00 PM | Softball
CATHEDRAL CITY – After equalizing San Diego in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings and the eighth to extend Friday afternoon's matchup at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic, the Cal Poly softball program took advantage of four Toreros errors in the ninth to score four times for a 6-5, come-from-behind victory at Big League Dreams.
San Diego (2-12) made a fourth-inning run stand against Cal Poly (6-3) until the bottom of the seventh, when Mustang sophomore center fielder Jessica Clements doubled with one down before reaching third through a fly out. Facing a two-strike count, sophomore catcher Julia Barnett reached on a fielding error by Toreros first baseman Taylor Johnson and Clements scored to send the matchup to extra innings.
With the international tiebreaker rule in effect to open the eighth, San Diego went up 2-1, first loading the bases before Johnson singled home right fielder Jocellia Roberts. Clements threw out San Diego third baseman Izzy Owen at home to end the sequence and preserve Cal Poly's 2-1 deficit.
Sophomore second baseman Caroline Allman started Cal Poly's half of the eighth on second and the Mustangs – following freshman left fielder Kiara Blanchard's leadoff walk – registered two quick outs. Junior first baseman Kai Barrett then singled up the middle to score Allman and extend the game.
Into the ninth, San Diego advanced runners to the corner bases with one down before designated player EJ Joyner homered for a 5-2 lead.
However, San Diego – after recording an opening out – committed its four errors. Three came with a 5-3 lead and two down as Barrett delivered the game-winning blow, singling down the left field line to score junior shortstop Xiara Diaz.
In the circle for Cal Poly, freshman righthander Sophia Ramuno (4-2) earned the victory after conceding just three unearned runs and striking out seven.
