
Cal Poly Heads to Mary Nutter Classic for Four Games

SAN LUIS OBISPO – Off to its best start in 18 years, the Cal Poly softball program hits the road for the first time in 2023 with four scheduled games at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic at Big League Dreams in Cathedral City, Calif. Having won five of its opening six matchups for the first time since 2005, Cal Poly (5-1) – resuming action following a pair of Tuesday home wins against Idaho State – opens tournament play on Thursday, Feb. 23 with a 10 a.m. doubleheader against Texas Tech (9-2) and No. 24 Missouri (9-2). Action continues on Friday, Feb. 24 versus San Diego (2-10) at 3 p.m. The Mustangs complete play against California (9-2) on Saturday, Feb. 25 at 10 a.m. Returning to the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic for the first time since 2019, Cal Poly has compiled a 14-19-1 overall record in seven previous tournament appearances.

CAL POLY VERSUS MARY NUTTER COLLEGIATE CLASSIC OPPONENTS: The Mustangs are undefeated against Texas Tech through three all-time matchups, with Cal Poly handing the Red Raiders a 3-0 setback in the last meeting on Feb. 11, 2012 in Tempe, Ariz. … Cal Poly and Missouri have met just once prior with the Tigers earning an 8-3 victory on Feb. 16, 2008 in Las Vegas … Cal Poly leads the series versus San Diego, 6-3, with the Toreros winning the last matchup on Feb. 8, 2020 at UCLA, 4-3 … California leads the Division I series against Cal Poly, 17-6, with the Mustangs winning the last matchup at the 2020 Fresno State Kickoff Classic, 5-2.
BARNETT'S STRONG START: Limited to four hits in just 15 appearances during her 2022 freshman year, Cal Poly sophomore catcher Julia Barnett takes a team leading .529 (9-for-17) batting average into the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic. With three multi-hit games – including three-hit efforts during wins against North Dakota (Feb. 11) and Idaho State (Feb. 21) – Barnett hit her first career homer during an opening-day victory versus North Dakota.
RAMUNO RISES IN THE CIRCLE: Making her collegiate debut with a victory and six strikeouts against Nevada (Feb. 11), freshman righthander Sophia Ramuno (3-1) ranks third among Big West pitchers with 28 strikeouts. Featuring a 2.00 ERA and 4-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio, Ramuno is averaging 1.3 strikeouts per inning. She struck out a career best eight Nevada hitters on Feb. 12.
CONDON ON VERGE OF HISTORY: Ranked seventh in Big West Conference history with 435 career victories entering the 2023 season, 19th-year head coach Jenny Condon requires just nine more Mustang wins to overtake Lisa Boyer (1989-04) for total victories by a Cal Poly softball head coach. Condon (435) and Boyer (443) have combined for 76.6 (878 of 1,145) percent of the victories in Cal Poly softball history. In Cal Poly Athletics Department history, only current baseball head coach Larry Lee (2003-) has managed more victories (614) than Boyer or Condon.
CAL POLY SELECTED SIXTH IN BIG WEST PRESEASON POLL: With sophomore outfielder Jessica Clements earning a position on the preseason coaches' team, the Cal Poly softball program was selected for a sixth-place finish in the 2023 Big West Preseason Poll. Cal Poly collected 40 total points in the poll and one first-place vote to finish just one point behind CSUN. Defending Big West champion Cal State Fullerton was selected to retain its title with 80 points and eight of 10 first-place votes. Last year's runner-up, Long Beach State, finished second with 68 points and the remaining first-place vote. Hawai'i (59 points) and UC San Diego (56) finished third and fourth in the poll, respectively.
THE COMPANY YOU KEEP: Four of Cal Poly's opening 15 games occur versus programs ranked in the Feb. 21 edition of the USA Today/NFCA Division I Top 25 Coaches Poll.
