CATHEDRAL CITY – Freshman left fielder Kiara Blanchard's (above) two-run single provided the Cal Poly softball program a first-inning lead versus Texas Tech during Thursday's opening matchup of the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic at Big League Dreams, but the Red Raiders scored twice in the top of the seventh to edge Cal Poly, 3-2. Cal Poly also held a first-inning lead versus No. 24 Missouri in Thursday's second game before falling to the Tigers, 9-1 (five innings).
During Thursday's opening matchup against Texas Tech (10-2), Cal Poly (5-3) fell behind 1-0 in the top of the first inning after Red Raiders first baseman Ellie Bailey singled home designated player Makinzy Herzog with one down.
Cal Poly starting freshman righthander Sophia Ramuno (3-2) eventually stranded the bases loaded before the Mustangs themselves filled the bags full during the bottom half. Blanchard then delivered a two-run single through the right side of the infield to plate sophomore center fielder Jessica Clements and junior right fielder Juju Sargent for the 2-1 advantage.
Handed the lead, Ramuno allowed Texas Tech singles in the second and third innings before setting down the Red Raiders in order during the fourth and fifth. She left one more on base during the sixth before Texas Tech equalized in the seventh after Herzog followed pinch hitter Demi Elder's leadoff double with a run-scoring double of her own (both hits came on full counts). Two batters later, first baseman Ellie Bailey singled in Herzog to hand the Red Raiders a 3-2 lead.
Following the two-run first, Cal Poly stranded two baserunners in each of the second, third and fourth innings before being retired in order to complete the fifth. Sargent then hit into a double play to close the sixth.
Into the bottom of the seventh, Mustang sophomore catcher Julia Barnett singled to reach with one down, but Herzog – on in relief for Texas Tech – forced a fly out from sophomore second baseman Caroline Allman and a fly out by Blanchard to end the matchup.
During Thursday's second game against 24th-ranked Missouri (10-2), Cal Poly opened the scoring in the top of the first inning with Clements and Sargent drawing successive leadoff walks before Barnett produced a run-scoring double.
In the circle for Cal Poly, sophomore righthander Paige Maier (1-1) retired six of the first seven spots in Missouri's lineup before catcher Megan Moll walked to open the bottom of the third. Shortstop Jenna Laird followed two batters later with a run-scoring double to left center to tie the matchup. Maier walked and hit the next two Tigers batters to load the bases for third baseman Kara Daly, who connected for a grand slam to center field and 5-1 Missouri advantage.
Following the first, Cal Poly was held hitless the remainder of the matchup by Missouri starter Cierra Harrison and reliever Megan Schumacher (1-0). Cal Poly twice drew walks in the top of the third, but stranded both baserunners.
Missouri, meanwhile, scored once more in the fourth and three times in the fifth – assisted by two Cal Poly errors – to solidify the run-rule decision.
