CATHEDRAL CITY – Closing play at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic with a Saturday afternoon matchup versus California, the Cal Poly softball program tied the game early and closed within a run of the lead in the fifth inning, but two runs apiece from the Golden Bears in the sixth and seventh helped secure an 8-3 victory versus the Mustangs.
Scoreless after the first inning, California (12-2) grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the second through designated player Sophie Medellin, who drew a leadoff walk, stole second and advanced to third on an errant throw before stealing home.
Cal Poly (6-4), however, tied the matchup at the first opportunity with freshman third baseman Mylina Garza and sophomore designated player Caroline Allman (above) producing back-to-back singles ahead of freshman left fielder Kiara Blanchard's walk that loaded the bases with no outs. Two batters later, second baseman Mia Perez produced a fielder's choice that brought home Allman – who finished with a career high three hits – for a 1-1 scoreline.
Both sides stranded baserunners in the third before California found the eventual winning runs during the top half of the fourth. A one-out home run from Golden Bears shortstop Acacia Anders swung the lead back toward California while center fielder Kennedy Thomas and catcher Kacey Zobac added run-contributing hits with two down for a 4-1 advantage.
Cal Poly closed within a run of California with Perez enjoying an RBI single in the fourth before junior shortstop Xiara Diaz cut the deficit to 4-3 with a run-scoring base hit with two down in the fifth.
The Golden Bears, however, struck back with two runs apiece in the sixth and seventh to finalize the 8-3 scoreline.
Cal Poly resumes action with a five-game run at the March 3-5 Cal State Fullerton-hosted Judi Garman Classic. Cal Poly's portion of the tournament schedule opens on Friday, March 3 versus Fresno State (10 a.m.) and No. 22 Oregon (5:30 p.m.).
