Cal Poly Falls in 90th Minute during Blue-Green Opener
9/21/2022 9:11:00 PM | Men's Soccer
SAN LUIS OBISPO – Cal Poly men's soccer sophomore defender Nate Colley's 89th-minute penalty conversion tied Wednesday evening's Blue-Green rivalry opener at Alex G. Spanos Stadium late, but UC Santa Barbara forward Salvador Aguilar's headed goal 12 seconds from full time handed the Gauchos a 2-1 victory in front of 10,392 fans – the 25th largest regular season crowd figure in NCAA history.
Cal Poly, which outshot UC Santa Barbara, 14-12, trailed the Gauchos following an 18th-minute opening goal from forward Alexis Ledoux. With 85 seconds remaining in regulation, however, UC Santa Barbara goalkeeper Leroy Zeller was whistled for a foul inside his penalty area after crashing into Mustang freshman forward Isak Clausen.
Colley, returning from a three-game absence, stepped to the penalty spot and converted past Zeller to deadlock the matchup, 1-1.
Just over a minute later though, UC Santa Barbara defender Jorge Aldana crossed from the right side of Cal Poly's penalty box in front of goal for Aguilar, who headed the ball down and past Cal Poly sophomore goalkeeper Gabe Penner for the game-winner.
Penner recorded a career best three saves for the Mustangs (0-7-0), stopping the Gauchos twice early during the first half and once more in the 79th to preserve Cal Poly's 1-0 deficit.
Wednesday's attendance of 10,392 spectators was 683 fans short of a sellout at Spanos Stadium.
The best-attended sporting event annually in San Luis Obispo County, the Cal Poly-UC Santa Barbara series has now drawn 27 of the top 63 regular season crowd figures in NCAA history
Cal Poly completes Big West Conference preparations – and a three-game home stand – against San Diego on Saturday, Sept. 24. Kickoff is 5 p.m.
