Cal Poly Falls to San Diego in Non-Conference Finale

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Cal Poly men's soccer wrapped up Big West preparations and a three-match homestand Saturday night at Alex G. Spanos Stadium, falling 4-0 to San Diego.
The Mustangs outshot their opponent 6-3 in the first half, but the Toreros (2-3-5) capitalized on their opportunities in the opening 45 minutes, scoring twice on three shots on goal.
San Diego midfielder Mason Tunbridge netted a hat track, scoring on a penalty in the 11th minute and netting goals in the 14th and 62nd minute. Forward Nicklas Clausen scored the final goal of the match for the Toreros in the 64th minute.
Cal Poly had several chances to score in the first half as a shot by sophomore midfielder Andrew McGee in the 19th minute blasted off the left post and a header from sophomore defender Conner Leber in the 40th minute went just over the top of the net.
Shots on goal from redshirt freshman midfielder Richie Garcia in the 73rd minute and sophomore forward Rory Folan in the 77th minute were saved by San Diego goalkeeper Jason Dubrovich.
Sophomore goalkeeper Gabe Penner earned his third straight start for the Mustangs and freshman goalkeeper Nicky McCune was inserted in between the pipes for the final 45 minutes. Each keeper secured one save.
Freshman forward Oren Stuppel made his first career appearance for the Mustangs in the 83rd minute.
This match marked the first time Cal Poly had hosted San Diego at the Division I level.
Cal Poly (0-8) opens Big West action on Wednesday, Sept. 28 at UC Davis. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
