Mustangs Draw 1-1 at UC Davis in Wednesday Big West Opener
9/28/2022 6:30:00 PM | Men's Soccer
DAVIS – Cal Poly men's soccer junior midfielder Tony Ruiz's 23rd-minute opening goal was cancelled out by UC Davis forward Cason Goodman in the 78th as the Mustangs and Aggies finished Wednesday afternoon's Big West Conference opener with a 1-1 draw.
Sophomore goalkeeper Gabe Penner chalked up a career high four saves for Cal Poly (0-8-1, 0-0-1), which found Wednesday's opening goal with just its second shot on target.
With Penner recording his second save of the afternoon in the 20th, Cal Poly surged ahead three minutes later after sophomore defender Conner Leber reached the UC Davis penalty area with a throw-in from the right touchline. The Aggies were unable to clear and Ruiz (above) – an offseason transfer from Hartnell College – tapped in his first goal as a Mustang.
Into the second half, Penner recorded save No. 3 in the 50th and Cal Poly enjoyed attempts to double the lead in the 63rd and 64th, but midfielder Richie Garcia's initial attempt at the right post was saved by UC Davis goalkeeper Charles Janssen before forward Sean McTague grazed the crossbar.
Cal Poly freshman forward Conner Lisenbee was then whistled offside in 73rd after hitting an attempt past Janssen.
Twelve minutes from full-time, however, the Aggies equalized after forward Ethan Hoard chipped for Goodman.
Cal Poly returns home to host UC Irvine on Sunday, Oct. 2. Kickoff from Alex G. Spanos Stadium is 5 p.m.
