Mustangs Slide into Second with 2-1 Win versus UC Irvine

SAN LUIS OBISPO – Freshman forward Conner Lisenbee's first collegiate goal and junior midfielder Tony Ruiz's team-leading second helped mark the difference Sunday evening as the Cal Poly men's soccer program overturned an early deficit versus UC Irvine to produce its first victory of the season with a 2-1 decision inside Alex G. Spanos Stadium.
Sophomore goalkeeper Gabe Penner chalked up two saves in his first career victory for Cal Poly (1-8-1, 1-0-1), which remained one of only two unbeaten programs in the Big West Conference standings and took over second place on four points with Sunday's win. Early in the race, Cal Poly trails Big West leader UC Santa Barbara (7-2-2, 2-0-0) by two points, but leads six programs with three points.
Cal Poly resumes Big West action on Wednesday, Oct. 5 at Cal State Fullerton. Kickoff from Titan Stadium is 7 p.m.
Cal Poly produced Sunday's first shots on target with Ruiz and Lisenbee turned away in the fifth and sixth minutes, respectively. UC Irvine, however, found Sunday's opening goal with midfielder Mario Anaya chipping over the top of the Cal Poly defense for Oscar Cervantes, who headed past Penner in the 19th minute.
Cal Poly equalized, however, just five minutes later as sophomore forward Jackson Kestler latched onto a turnover in UC Irvine's half and found Lisenbee, who scored directly in front of the Anteater goal.
The Mustangs then surged ahead in the 33rd with freshman midfielder Richie Garcia dribbling into the UC Irvine penalty area before being disposed. Ruiz collected the errant ball and shot past Anteaters goalkeeper Luke Pruter to place Cal Poly in front.
Leading for just the third time this season – but for the second successive match at halftime – the Mustangs received Penner saves in the 41st and once more in the 61st to preserve Cal Poly's advantage.
