Mustangs Lead Early, but Drop 3-2 Decision at Cal State Fullerton
10/5/2022 9:56:00 PM | Men's Soccer
FULLERTON – Junior midfielder Tony Ruiz (above) scored in his third successive game – handing the Cal Poly men's soccer program the lead after just 65 seconds – and freshman forward Sean McTague bookended Wednesday evening's matchup with his first collegiate goal, but Cal State Fullerton scored three times inside the opening eight minutes of the second half Wednesday evening to deal the Mustangs a 3-2 defeat at Titans Stadium.
Sophomore goalkeeper Gabe Penner recorded a career best five saves for Cal Poly (1-9-1, 1-1-1), which slipped from second place to fifth in the Big West Conference standings with Wednesday's setback. With four points, however, Cal Poly trails Big West leader UC Santa Barbara (7-2-3, 2-0-1) by just three points after the Gauchos finished in a scoreless draw at CSU Bakersfield earlier Wednesday.
Cal Poly returns home to host UC Riverside (3-6-2, 2-1-0) – sharing second place on six points with Cal State Fullerton and CSUN – on Saturday, Oct. 8. Kickoff from Alex G. Spanos Stadium is 7 p.m.
Sending Wednesday's kickoff into Cal State Fullerton's end, Cal Poly benefitted immediately from a foul by Titans midfielder Jessy Sotelo on forward Noah Boettiger at the top of the penalty box. Ruiz stepped to the mark and fired into the upper left corner of the net and past Titans goalkeeper Tetsuya Kadono.
Ruiz's three-match goal streak is the lengthiest consecutive run by a Mustang since All-Big West selection Manny Perez scored seven times in five successive matches in 2019.
At the other end of Titans Stadium, Penner chalked up saves in the fourth, 12th and 29th minutes to preserve Cal Poly's lead as the Mustangs – outshot in the first half, 5-1 – took the 1-0 advantage into the break.
Penner recorded his fourth save 79 seconds after the restart, but Cal State Fullerton's comeback began in the 47th minute as forward Julian Madrigal tied the matchup after Cal Poly failed to clear a bounding ball in the box. Midfielder Justin Jovel placed the Titans in front two minutes later after Madrigal squared a pass back in front of goal. Jovel then added his second in the 53rd with a strike from the top of the box.
Cal Poly produced seven shots in the second half following Cal State Fullerton's scoring stretch with sophomore forward Andrew McGee forcing a 64th-minute save from Kadono before freshman defender Oscar Baudey struck the crossbar in the 79th.
The Mustangs though pulled within a goal in the 83rd as Ruiz picked out McTague toward the right post. McTague's attempt was slowed by Kadono, but not stopped and the ball trickled over the goal line to cut Cal State Fullerton's lead to 3-2.
