Kleinhammes Double Earns Last-Second Draw with UC Riverside

SAN LUIS OBISPO – Senior forward Max Kleinhammes produced two equalizing goals for the Cal Poly men's soccer program Saturday evening – the first in the 47th minute, the second with 18 seconds remaining in regulation – as the Cal Poly men's soccer program earned a 2-2 draw against UC Riverside inside Alex G. Spanos Stadium.
Cal Poly sophomore goalkeeper Gabe Penner faced 11 shots, but was called upon to make just a 70th-minute save during a match that featured only five shots on goal – with four finding the back of the net.
Trailing 1-0 at the break following a 35th-minute opening goal from UC Riverside defender Freymar Omarsson, Cal Poly equalized 79 seconds into the second half as Kleinhammes headed a corner from freshman midfielder Richie Garcia past Highlanders goalkeeper Carolos Gonzalez.
With just three combined shots on frame through the opening 89 minutes, UC Riverside – which had the opportunity to take over top spot in the Big West Conference standings with a victory Saturday – surged ahead 59 seconds from full time as midfielder Issa Badawiya set up forward Luka Lukic.
Cal Poly, however, earned its fifth and final corner of the night after the restart and sophomore forward Ocean Salari's effort was headed by Kleinhammes past Gonzalez a second time to help earn the Mustangs a point.
Kleinhammes entered play Saturday with just two career goals as a Mustang, but doubled his Division I total in 43 minutes.
With Saturday's draw, Cal Poly (1-9-2, 1-1-2) slipped to eighth in the Big West standings on five points. The Mustangs, however, trail conference leader UC Santa Barbara by just three points. Three programs share second place on seven points.
Three more programs share fifth place with six points, including Cal Poly's next two opponents – CSUN (Wednesday, Oct. 11) and UC San Diego (Saturday, Oct. 15). Kickoff for both road matches is 7 p.m.
